For a second, there was a pause surrounding them, like letting the two of them feel the sinking of the situation. The sinking in time. Xavier scratched his left cheek. He was pale; the moonlight danced on the flesh from the glass dome of the indoor garden. He mulled over his question for another second before asking Jeremiah, "Hey, have you ever regretted this?"

"Mm ... isn't love tragic?" she said. "You can't count on love to solely make you happy. You must prepare to be ruined and then put back together repeatedly, time and time, being broken, then mended, then shattered, and restored, over and over and over again, in the never-ending cycle of a journey. That's how you taste true love." "Sounds like a lot of trouble." "But it'll be all worth it in the end." But was it? Was love that all? A notion so puzzling, veiled in a poetry so perplexing, on raw and bloody emotions, on human connection, and bonds beyond comprehension. A good love must take on every facet of tribulation, the torture of growth, how it would crucify you before taking you to the highest heaven during the next three days. It's bamboozling. Baffling. But this was most evidently understood by Her Majesty in her cryptic series of life choices. Xavier was young. He didn't understand. He didn't want to. His mother giggled. "You know ... when I was a little girl, there was an old superstition that said you'd get your love returned if the first snowflake or raindrop of the year fell first onto your nose." She booped Xavier's nose with her thumb. "Have you had someone you like, my little prince?" He wore a frown. "No, Mother, I don't need anything like it." Her Majesty rattled Xavier's shoulders as though tomorrow might be his final chance to find love. As if he hadn't had thousands of years to figure it out. "But, why? Why restrain your emotions? You need love. You'll need to love, and you'll need to be loved, and you'll fight for love with all your teeth and nails. You might not understand it now, but maybe later. Yes, later ... when you're slightly older ….. you'll see.”
