Turns out in addition to other more normal fibre uses it can also be processed into a fully biodegradable bioplastic used for cutlery and surfboard fins, among other things.

Increased mezcal demand leads to waste of the huge leaves of the agave plant, generally left to sit in the field as mulch or burned as fuel. This used to be a major source of fibre in pre-Spanish times, including for papermaking.
