This was my takeaway from the last pandemic as well. No matter how bad things get, Americans will always just set a new baseline for the amount of death they believe is acceptable and go on with their lives. No lessons will be learned, no justice will be served. The bad guys just win sometimes.
My first thought (after oh my God) is , "well, maybe when people start dropping dead, people will realize what's going on." But that's fantasy. We just went through a pandemic and we know the lies will continue, people believe what they want to believe. There's not going to be a big "aha!" moment.
