the personal qualities that make people prone to committing sex abuse are also qualities that are valued and lauded in many professional contexts

sex abuse of boys hides in plain sight, sex abuse of girls doesn’t hide. and ultimately, patriarchal society thinks men own children so it doesn’t really care when children are terrorized and abused by men

my own experiences as a young girl being sexualized from the moment I sprouting breasts at age 10 color my perspective I’m sure, but it’s very obviously socially acceptable to talk about a girl child’s body in adult terms in a way that simply does not exist for boys

The widespread and widely covered up sex abuse of boys (see: scouting, the catholic church) demonstrates that it’s not that simple. The dynamic with young girls is different but sex abuse of children is handwaved away regardless of gender

the nasty truth is that many many people do not see young teen girls as children

I truly believe that is the heart of the apathy to this situation. The president isn’t a pedophile because a lot of men think it’s normal and ok to be sexually attracted to their daughter’s middle school friends.

if we take patriarchal attitudes about how men ought to behave and what is permissible under these power structures to its most extreme logical conclusion, you get serial killers and pedophiles. this is not an aberration or perversion. This is what happens when you tell men they own everyone else
