rewatched Bo Burnham: What. for the kajillionth time because my anxiety is just too damn much right now. anyway had a good time as expected and also posted about it
my review of Bo Burnham's What opens with the ending lyrics for his song Repeat Stuff, then says: Very likely my all-time personal favorite of any piece or form of media ever conceived within my awareness. The lyrics to What. make up my genetic code. To know this special is to know Me. It's got everything; poetry, gun violence, romance, godzilla, su*cide, brain surgery, masturbation, religion, talking frogs and unicorns, all to the tune of the greatest (and funniest) songs ever written. Not timeless but not everything should be. It's messy in the way that a portrait of a soul is. It's personal to a degree that shouldn't work and because of that (and Burnham's impeccable timing) it works even better. You won't love it as much as I do, you can't. Sometimes I think I was created in a lab for the sole purpose of enjoying Bo Burnham: What.

oh yeah also i feel like posting my letterboxd reviews on here and i watched the blues brothers the other night
a letterboxd review that reads: "The Blues Brothers is a questionably aged conceptual-smoothie-blend of O Brother Where Art Thou and Starship Troopers that borrows from both but never is trying to be anything other than itself. It sticks to the silly absurdist fun that makes it feel like a muppet-less muppet movie, with its indulgence into both slapstick and the grandiose. Going in, I did NOT know I would be treated to three fantastic cameos from the great Aretha Franklin AND Ray-fucking-Charles AND James Brown, all breathing life into the world in ways no-one else could (or has since). Alas, they're all reduced to just cameos, and vast majority of the film follows the least swagged out white boys from Chicago (or most, depending on the strength of your affection toward Dan Aykroyd), on their hero's journey to get the band back together." the review continues: "I use the phrase 'heroes journey' not because the Blues Bros. follows that structure, but because Heroic is the only word that can accurately describe how many hyper-violent pigs eat shit throughout the film; due to their mountainous incompetence, bloated-beyond-belief budget, and most importantly their undying revenge quest against the Blues Brothers themselves (which adds to the expansive list of common goals between cops and nazis (which also adds to the expansive list of nitpicks I have with the film- just have the nazis and the pigs be the same guys!! They already are the same in real life; defending each-other at rallies, filling the same societal roles, spewing the same hatred, chasing and killing and tormenting the same groups of people, plus in the film you'd get to reduce an entire subplot that has no payoff into something that strengthens the comedy of the overall script." the review continues: "You don't need an army of fascist pigs, and a battalion of aryan supremacists, and a coincidentally all-white country band with guns just to serve the same dual-purpose of being both ontologically evil and violently hating on the Blues Bros. However you look at it, including extremists the way they did was a choice, and maybe not one that was all the way thought out. O Brother Where Art Thou turns that choice into a decision, lead by competent creators who created a reason to give screen presence to such real and vapid evils. Even though that film felt to me at parts even more disconnected from itself than Blues Bros did, O Brother is in many ways just a better film about essentially the same thing. Nevertheless, The Blues Brothers makes for a handful of hilarious bits but overall feels like a waist of time. Except for that one chase scene, which was worth every penny and second it took to capture on film."
