“We killed a bird, cooked it, and ate it as part of a feast day,” is to my knowledge a concept which every culture has. How can one possible fail at comprehending the Thanksgiving turkey?
It’s how you end up with language like “paperwork American” or the idea that Thanksgiving turkey is some sort of natural ethno-national tradition that certain other groups are incapable of ever appreciating

also: elite reporters handle criticism from the right better than criticism from the left for two reasons:

1) they know and like the right-wingers
2) left-wing criticism focuses on competence, and right-wing criticism focuses on ideology

Happy holidays!
Annual shoutout to that one time in early November when I was getting lunch at the bar and the manager put on Christmas carols.

The entire waitstaff went deadly silent, disappeared into the back room, and then the GAME OF THRONES soundtrack kicked on.

It all would have been much easier if, as would have happened if we were remotely a serious country, it all ended with the Access Hollywood interview.

100% this.
Would you be ok with your 15 year old daughter giving partially nude massages to men in their 30s—50s? How about your 15 year old son? Fifteen year old CHILDREN do not have the reasoning to be involved in any of this. If I learned ANYTHING after 37 years of teaching it’s this. Dead wrong.

At times I’ve had an almost out of body sensation that I am not just living today, but I am experiencing history happen. I felt it right after I cast my vote for Obama. And when my state legalized same sex marriage and the bridge near my house was flying rainbow flags.

I'm not trying to center myself here (especially because mine was not CSA). I say it because I know many folks are feeling this, too--that it DOES matter to us every time a famous guy gets away with this shit, and every time he doesn't.

The funny thing is the people who always bring up Bernie Sanders in my mentions always miss the fact that if I were a fanboy for any politician, it would be Obama. But we shouldn’t be a fanboy/girl for any of these people. They are our employees and we should hold them to work standards.

So many. Most recently The Revisionaries (blew my mind in ways I can’t explain) Why Fish Don’t Exist (science book became history book became biography became romance and had me in tears) and My Best Friend’s Exorcism (best depiction of teenage girlhood, laughed, ugly sobbed and was so proud of us).
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

And MAGA Republicans hellbent on destroying Obamacare IS what got us here.

Keep voting them out because our lives are not bargaining chips.

Our latest opinion piece:
Opinion: D.C.'s new streatery rules are a costly miscalculation
The city's streatery guidelines are punishing small businesses and vibrant neighborhoods. We need a permanent solution to keep these staples of the city’s dining scene.
