Many are hearing the good news of the Gospel as something they are waiting for at the end of life. However we’re being invited to begin eternity with God today, now, within our lifetime.

However the word eternal points to an existence with no beginning or end. No before and after. This is how big and grand an invitation were being offered. To partake in the life of God, the Alpha and Omega.

Eternity speaks to timelessness. It also speaks to right now, not later.

However a proper mystic recognizes that intellect is the servant, not the master. It bows before mystery. It listens. It abides.

Knowledge can take you only so far, and beyond that threshold lies mystery. The contemplative mind arises when we release our addiction to grasping and yield to what is. This isn’t passivity but deep receptivity. Despite how it may sound this is not anti-intellectual, we have minds for a reason.

The ordinary mind is brilliant at survival, planning, categorizing, measuring and yet it cannot touch God. It works in dualities: in and out, right and wrong, this versus that. Useful, but ultimately limited. At some point, the aspirant sees the ceiling.

For the Christian aspirant this is often known as the contemplative mind. This is something that must be cultivated. At some point the limits of knowledge must be seen. The mystery of what is must be yeilded to, we must let go of our own knowing, and even the need to know.

Mystery is like a holy solvent: it dissolves the rigid structures of our mind, not to leave us in confusion, but to open us into a different dimension of knowing, one that is relational, experiential, intimate.
