And the thing is, this isn't, like, a bad thing. It's just a consequence of the way these kinds of shows were made. Dark Shadows was contemporary with shows like Star Trek and Batman, but unlike them, this show had to pump out 5 episodes a week! It gives it a unique theatrical quality that I adore.

I think my brain might just be broken. Genuinely, every creative decision here that everyone else hates comes off to me as endearing. And the framing of it around Chewy's family putzing around the house reminds me of being a kid fuckin around aimlessly on Thanksgiving morning. There's a charm to it!

Legitimately, for real though, I don't actually hate this thing. The pacing is leisurely. The focus on unsubtitled Wookie dialogue is inspired. The variety show format is fun.

It's been so interesting revisiting this series after so many years. I definitely didn't pay much attention to the plot when I watched it as a 5yo. I don't think I even knew Sarah was supposed to be a ghost, or that her singing London Bridge was supposed to be odd or unsettling. I was a dumb kid lol

Jonathan Frid was a damn good actor, man. He was so good at playing the romantic, introspective gentleman one moment, and the wildly abusive, kidnapping, bloodsucking monster the next. It's really obvious why basically he alone saved Dark Shadows from cancelation.
