I thoroughly enjoyed Dogs of War by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I chose this cover depiction because it's the closest to how I imagine Rex. He and the rest of the multiform assault pack, Honey, Dragon and Bees, have all stayed with me.

Also, interlibrary loan for the win

To my chicken peeps. Pls get more familiar w good biosecurity. You should not be stepping into other people's chicken pens & vice versa. Nor visiting petting zoos, wildlife parks or feed stores w/o disinfecting your shoes after. Avian Influenza is spread by fomites. We take flock safety seriously

Sourdough pumpernickel bagels made with dark rye flour, molasses and caraway seeds. The things I love but cannot get here in the mountains, I learn to make myself

Kung pao made with home grown chicken and chiles dried from the garden. Leftover rice, fried up with eggs from our hens. Some eggrolls I bought from a lady a few dirt roads over who sells food out of her house. Who says you can't get Chinese "takeout" in the mountains? 🍽

Had some sunshine on our walk today. Everything is wet from much needed rain

First, the chicks hatched. Then we had a couple of sunny days. Now, the solstice. These things have been good for my heart

My weekend bakes were sourdough cinnamon raisin bagels and a plain sourdough sandwich loaf. I arrived super late to the sourdough train and really don't know what I'm doing half the time. I follow the recipes and keep my fingers crossed. It mostly works out in the end

Rice gruel, congee, porridge, peasant food. My beloved winter breakfast. 1 cup rice to 8 cups water or broth in the crockpot 6 hrs or until fully broken. Serve plain or with any topping sweet or savory. Countless possibilities and one pot is our breakfast for a week.

Okay, yes the #booksky feed is overflowing with book challenge posts, but I'm so heartened to see all of them and to know how many people are reading and feel touched by books.

The whole one book per day thing, eh. Robopocalypse is legitimately scary

It's not uncommon to find bookmarks in returned books but today's find was just the absolute best. So, if you returned Practical Astronomy and are now missing your favorite bookmark, let me know

Mountain peeps, how much wood do you need to stay warm in winter? Our home has never had central air. It would be extremely expensive. Downed oak is free for us if you don't count the labor of cutting, hauling, splitting, stacking and more hauling. Staying warm is basically a part time job

Besides citrus, persimmons are just about the last fruit we harvest. Even from just one tree there are always more than we can use so most of them are given away
