My 1st radio contact with Antarctica, ~17000km from Montreal: Igor Taranenko (RI1ANE) kindly responded to my tiny mobile vertical antenna radiating 25W of HF RF from a mobile mag mount on my condo's deck railing. He is at Progress Base, a Russian research station. The ionosphere is amazing.

I did all the aeronautical and photographical calculations, yet the pilots of this Air Transat Airbus A330 flight TSC399, travelling to Montreal from Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), were flying an altitude about 500ft below what I'd hoped. Better luck next year!
