I don't normally repost videos from this godforsaken hell platform but the RLM folks are doing essential reporting here on AI being used as a Trojan horse to "protect" people while covertly censoring creators. Turn off Restricted mode, support your favs, and remember: fuck Google.

Wrote this piece a few years back and now I'm very proud it's found a home in the incredible catalogue of works from the Bright Lights Film Journal!

When taken as a whole, it’s apparent that Hooper was just as politically minded in the creation of this film as he was with the first, his sights set firmly[...]

Andrew Dominik is such a gifted filmmaker and I wish he'd stop ruining his reputation with stupid shit like his new AI Elvis video for Nick Cave. A ghastly thing, turning photographs that perfectly captured a moment into a sloppy collection of human images given movement by an inhuman hand.

Intensely disappointed in @jayapal.house.gov upon hearing from her office that she stands by her endorsement of Bruce "I'm not killing anybody" Harrell. How are you gonna sell yourself as a key progressive for the Dems when standing by the guy who helped kill Seattle's progressive wing point blank?

Hard to even articulate how awful today is for news, how many fucked up supreme court decisions got handed down, just fully engulfed in a tide of bullshit. A better world than this is still possible. But holy fuck is the hole we have to climb out of deep right now, and getting deeper by the day.

Finally got around to watching 28 WEEKS LATER and I'm baffled at its reputation even in film circles. Compared to DAYS, the political edge is so much more apparent, and as a zombie film I found the frankness of its cruelty dovetailed nicely with the imagery it ripped straight out of the Iraq War.

Tomorrow is the first shoot day for a short I wrote and directed. Haven't been this close to seeing art I envisioned in my head come to life on-screen since college. Thrilling and terrifying. Life is wild.

In other news, the brand new 4K edition of SHOCKER I got for the holidays is scratched enough that I need to replace the disc. At least the year is closing out on an appropriately disappointing note, all things considered.

C&B has been one of my favorite websites as a film lover since I first stumbled on it a few years back, so it breaks my heart to see them in the same place most arts non-profits are at. If you can help them at all, in any way, please try.
'@cinephiliabeyond.org has suddenly and inexplicably dropped from 100,000 unique visits per day to barely 700, threatening our campaign and website. We are not the only ones; most independent publishers share a similar fate.'

Tough spot to be in that I both dislike the musical Wicked and think Jon Chu is a generally competent commercial hack but also want to let people have their joy and appreciate a movie that's clearly brightening the season for folks a bit.

Empathy, critical standards - always, you wrestle inside me.

Watched THE PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK last night and came away with the perhaps incorrect conclusion that doing heroin in NYC and looking like 70s Al Pacino seems cool, actually.
