The latest entry! Earlier this year I was able to once again top 8 another @axionnow.com Mega Modern, and again with Domain Zoo (this time with more blue cards to combat Rhinos). That means I'm qualified for the Axion 2024 Invitational, taking place this coming weekend.

Room for one more entry? 👀

Once we knew decklists, I was right about all but two.

Scales naturally beat RB Scam, and I had tuned my deck to be better against Murktide and Rhinos. Unfortunately, I got paired against most of my bad matchups and went 2-4.

Scales did win the event, so I was at least right about something!

Another Pioneer RCQ top 8, and another Thoughtseize brew. I was preparing for a Fable ban and came up with an Abzan list that looked fun (including cool RKF Grim Flayer art). Fable wasn't banned, but the art was too cool and I top 8'd the RCQ anyway.

It did hurt to cut Siege Rhino from this list...

So far I've played two Regional Championships (Sofia & Athens), both Pioneer. My results weren't good (Rakdos 1-3, Boros 2-4), and definitely something I'm aiming to improve upon. At least both times I feel like I've picked solid decklists, and my testing has very much improved after Brussels!

Being qualified for the RC meant I could play around a bit more with the Pioneer RCQ season and let me try an idea I'd had. Sheoldred + Treasure Cruise was indeed very good, and Dimir helped me to a MTGO trophy and RCQ top 8.

I still think Treasure Cruise isn't in enough PIoneer decks...

Another @axionnow.com event - this time top 4 at Mega Modern. With the emergence of Scam, Yawgmoth got a rest and I picked up Domain Zoo. Pointing five points of damage at my opponent would quickly become something I enjoyed doing.

Team Magic events are always good fun, and Team Sealed is definitely my favourite. Alongside two friends, we took down an @axionnow.com event and rewarded with our team recreated as a Soldier Token. I think this will always be one of the coolest prizes I've ever had from an event.

As RCQs began to take hold, we got an opportunity to play paper Pioneer again. It took a while to find a deck I liked - so I copied a Max McVety list (whose ideas had also shaped a bunch of my Infect lists), changed one or two cards, and won an RCQ.
November 19, 2024 at 10:36 AM
With MH2 really burying Infect, I picked up Yawgmoth - and it quickly became one of my favourite decks of all time. It helped me to a flurry of MTGO trophies and RCQ top 8s (sadly no wins 😢). It got better when Agatha's Soul Cauldron was printed, but it was much more fun to play before that.

Another covid brew that took a MTGO trophy - inspired by Dreadhorde Arcanist plus Become Immense, Brushfire Elemental proved that random uncommons could still make an impact in Modern Horizons Modern (at least in 2021 this was true).
November 19, 2024 at 10:36 AM
Covid lockdowns also delivered by first (and so far only) top 8 in a MTGO Challenge, returning to my roots with Modern Infect.

Shortly after this Lava Dart become omnipresent in Modern, and Infect hasn't really been a competitive force ever since. RIP my Blighted Agent friends 🪦

As covid pandemic enforced lockdowns, I played more MTGO. The first highlight for me was the Sultai Lurrus deck I cooked up (pre-companion nerf). I'd never seen a deck successfully run the holy trinity of Goyf, Bob and Snapcaster - but this was a blast to play (briefly).

The PTQ win qualified me to play at Player's Tour Brussels - my first taste of a competitive, invite-only tournament. It was Pioneer's debut, my testing was quite chaotic and shockingly my results were not good (1-2 in each format) but it gave me something to build on.
November 19, 2024 at 10:36 AM
With the change on OP, we moved into the Player's Tour for that brief period. I won a PTQ with Temur Reclamation after spending all week testing Temur vs Sultai Midrange with my housemate (who I would beat in top 4). It's difficult to believe that Oko survived a B&R announcement in that format!

Part of the European Modern Series Final was an MH1 draft - a really great format. I found a particular niche with Aria of Flame, and these were some of the most fun draft trophies I've ever had (it will take a lot to beat them!).
November 19, 2024 at 10:36 AM
Modern Infect was the first Modern deck that I really gelled with and delivered consistent results. I used this list to win a European Modern Series Qualifier.
November 19, 2024 at 10:36 AM
The second draft was much more straightforward and I drafted a more preferred archetype. This deck finished 2-0-1, IDing the last round to let a fellow Brit not miss their train home (and allowing me to start drinking earlier).
November 19, 2024 at 10:36 AM
Drafting on day two of a GP was always the fun part. The day started with a tough draft, where I had a level up moment - the power level of my pod seemed quite low, so I made sure my deck was functional - even vanilla creatures can claim victory sometimes, and somehow I squeezed a 3-0 out of this.
November 19, 2024 at 10:36 AM
GP Strasbourg (RNA Limited) was my best GP performance (11-3-1). It was straight off the back of the RPTQ and I hadn't done much prep but I opened a strong sealed pool on day one - if anything I was disappointed to finish the day with three losses, as I thought I could have done better.
November 19, 2024 at 10:36 AM
My first RPTQ would be the last RPTQ (in the UK), and the format was RNA Standard. The meta was reasonably known so I worked to put together a deck that could fight on all corners. Several weekends huddled together with friends testing ended with this list that finished 5-2 for top 16.
November 19, 2024 at 10:36 AM
The first tournament I did well in was a PPTQ on their last ever weekend. The sealed deck was busted, but the draft deck was more fun - six of the other drafters fought over variants of Grixis whilst I pieced together a very improvised Selesnya deck to take the win.

Some good, clean Foundations draft fun to christen this account.

The set seems really fun. A return to proper Limited, without it being overly complicated or power crept. More sets like this please!
