Hope everyone is fine on Battle Of Britain day. On this day in 1940 an RAF airmen was awarded the Victoria Cross. Sgt John Hannah of Bomber Command was a Wireless Operator in a Hampden over Antwerp when they were hit by flak. He stayed in the aircraft fighting the fire with his bare hands.

698 Lancasters were involved in ops on D-Day. The map below shows their targets and number of aircraft involved.

Everyone think Bomber Command wasn't involved in the Airborne Assault in Op Market Garden? Turns out to be wrong. One Lancaster (DV171) of 463 (RAAF) Sqn took part, carrying nothing but a film unit to photograph and film the landings. It spent 25 minutes over the landings filming.

Avro Lancaster belly ventral turret.

Everyone says they were tried, they were rubbish and were soon phased out.

FACT: Lancaster Ventral Turrets were used until the end of the war!
