In my [REDACTED] year of #iteachmath. The way I teach ≠ the way I was taught. Wondering if #mtbos should now be #mbbos.

May also find me talking about photography, the outdoors, traveling, sports, SF, & hanging with my kids. Not necessarily in that order.

Made a Starter Pack of *current* K-12 math classroom teachers. Let me know if you should be added (or removed).

I've been an @theatlantic.com subscriber since I was given a gift subscription from my dad more than 20 years ago, and this dropped the same day that right-wing media is debating whether paid sex with a 15 year old is really so bad. The last straw for me. Will not be renewing my subscription.

Kind of wild that while food assistance was withheld from millions of families, one Trump-supporting billionaire (Ellison) saw his net worth grow more this year than the entire SNAP budget. And the YTD gains of the other four richest men would’ve fully covered salaries for all 2M federal employees.

Intellectually, I know I shouldn't lose any sleep when I have trouble convincing some high schoolers that being kind to yourself and to one another is an important part of math. And yet...

I'm so impressed by the long game here. A great example of a lesson turning into an authentic project, and a blog post three years in the making... ♾️
This is a lesson that failed the first time but through years of improvements has turned into a project that students love. If you teach rational functions, definitely check it out. #mtbos #iteachmath

The Power of Iteration in Teaching
I had a reflection the other day that came from observing the work of a teacher who I’ve now coached for four years.

Stuck in Palm Springs because our flight is cancelled. No idea how or when we are going to get home. 😬

Thanks a bunch Republicans.

Kershaw coming in to potentially end his career by getting the last out of the World Series would break my Giants fan brain.

The good news for the Blue Jays is that Yamamoto probably only has 7 more innings in him.

Not sure I've ever been so stressed about a baseball game when I haven't been a fan of either team.

Although to be fair, I am a fan of whoever is playing the Dodgers.

If we are being pedantic, which we tend to be in most Geometry classes, should we say one pile of 7 apples is congruent to a second pile of 7 apples, and not that the two piles are equal? ♾️

We had to cancel our large fall fundraiser for my kids' school this past weekend because of people's fears about ICE raids (classic 'murica stuff).

And we still need to raise close to $50K to pay for an art and dance teacher (classic 'murica stuff, part two).

Hey MLB, the best way to actually stand up against cancer right now is to be part of pushing back on this administration's dismantling of science.

@nytdiff.bsky.social is a must follow for anyone interested in or teaching media literacy, and this is a particular doozy.

Incredibly sad to have learned of the sudden and unexpected passing of Daniel Naroditsky, a Bay Area native, an incredible chess player, an amazing teacher, and most importantly a kind soul.

Thinking about this from an education lens. Not that *any* substantive media literacy is the norm, but even when this is taught we have to not just reflect on the content of the news, but we also need to critique what isn't said, who isn't interviewed, and what isn't considered to be a big story.
More people marched today than at any time in the history of the United States.

For @nytimes.com, it was the 6th most important story.

They are making sure that those in power do not see what they do not want to see.

This is not what we were brought up to think of as journalism.

An AI video of the president wearing a crown, "piloting"a military jet, and pooping on people is a new level of bananas in a presidency defined by absurdity.

Just saw the new? TikTok ad profiling a math teacher who posts math lessons, and FOIL played a prominent role in the ad. Whyyyyyyyyyy?

And how did they not find @howiehua.bsky.social? ♾️
