I'ver never known anyone who lived without peaks and valleys in mood or energy or both.

Today, I'm making a list of what I need to get done. I'm trying to make headway on each item. Tomorrow, I'll do some more.

Sometimes wind fills the sails. Sometimes, you just gotta row.

A practice that helps me lower my defenses, find my feelings and sort the social world: Thich Nhat Han's Nine Prayers.

I say each one:

For myself
for someone I like
for someone I love
for someone I'm neutral toward
for someone who causes me pain.

Repeat the "someone" list in plural.

My apologies! I made a mistake in my post about the terrific interview with @autastic.com founder Diane J. Wright.

You really should read it, though. And you should check out @autastic.com -- a groundbreaking site all on its own, BIPOC-centered and -led.

Great thread.

And great to pair with "Empire of Normality" from drrobertchapman.bsky.social. Dr. Chapman makes an excellent case that modern society has created a mass disabling event for neurodivergent people. Much respect.

Small note: The main reason my account is still anonymous is that I'm not as out as I'd like to be at my job. Coming out at work, for me, has been a mixed and occasionally harrowing experience.

My advice for newly aware NDs is to go slowly with disclosure. Stigma is real. You're going to feel it.

Autistic and neurodivergent people, broadly, have a lot to teach the world about the cost of not being yourself. Relaxing into authenticity can be a great challenge for social beings. Within reason, it is also how we thrive.

This is an idea I set in the back of my mind so it can percolate quietly.
"As I have thought more and more about masking, I think I finally understand why I am always, permanently tired. The effort I expend to internalise and quell myself, and the commensurate effort I expend to don and maintain my masks, is immense."

Super important words I finally learned (from my coach) in my 50s:

"Is this a good time to [ask/talk/say something] about [x,y,z]?"

If they say yes, then you have an invitation.

It's like approaching a door. Knock gently, and cross the threshold slowly.

Small technique, changed my work life.

A little late in the morning for this advice, maybe, but it's still good for a Monday morning. This one, I learned from my mom:

Sometimes there before the boss. Surprise them. Showing up even five minutes before they do buys you hours of good standing.

If you find yourself feeling lost in big meetings on Teams, try turning on closed captioning. It's a great accommodation you can give yourself. No need to ask anyone else.
