Personally, I think it is because by definition "mafia" means dealing with morally dubious themes. As soon as a novel is heavily focused on crime, pain and ambiguity around law and morals, for me it's dark romance. Hence the term "umbrella" I mentioned in the comment!

It's not that I don't explore the intimacy of my characters, I think DR is an umbrella genre, and doesn't have ONE specific meaning.

Yeah, even when s1 came out if I remember correctly, in an interview or something, they said it was always meant to be a 2-season thing, but they might release other series though!
