Nothing he could say made the youth reveal his feelings—his face seemed carved from granite, his usually radiant eyes lifeless. His voice, on the rare times he used it, had lost its cheerful timbre, and his movements were suddenly awkward and disjointed. To Adam it seemed that his younger brother had been spirited away and an automaton had taken his place.

The front of the hall erupted, as in came a schoolmarm. Six feet three inches tall with gray hair done up in a bun, arms that bulged with muscles, silver-framed spectacles that sat low on the nose. A high-necked dress, overstuffed bosom, bustled skirt over lean hips, and the face of an eagle carved in bronze. People fell over one another to get out of the way, clung to each other for support, doubled over with laughter as she strode to the middle of the dance-floor and asked in a shrieking falsetto, “Where’s the birthday girl?” “TOMMY!” Irene ran to him to be caught up in his arms and twirled around. When Tommy set her down, she had to hold on to him to remain standing. She laughed so hard tears ran down her face, tried to talk and choked on the words.

Irene came tripping down the stairs in a beaded deerskin dress and moccasins. She wore her black hair in two long braids, her forehead encircled by a silver-studded band Alec had made for her when they were children. A mask of feathers, which he’d presented earlier in the day, completed her costume. It was Hallowe’en and she was nineteen years old today, bubbling over with excitement and happiness.

I seem to have a plethora of "hats" in my MS. Here's one from the first chapter.
Text only: The trail split the canyon walls, walls that loomed tall and close and only gradually fell away, clearing the gloom from midday. The rider lifted his hat and drew a sleeve across his brow. It was much too hot for April. Too quiet. No breeze stirred the aspen leaves. No birds trilled, no squirrels scampered. Even the brook ran silently. His horse’s hooves, muffled by dust, sent up gray ghosts that hung in the air for an instant, then drifted back to earth. If he hadn’t known better, he’d have assumed this ranch was abandoned.
