Still getting a sense of how this place works - not used to the short form. But here's a link to the AUP website and the most recent call for submissions - and some thoughts about the value of Story in Animist thought. aurochspress.co.uk/the-journal

looks like we've made it through Storm Darragh, at least so far. Dogs decidedly unimpressed by all the scary wind noises, but firework night - I mean fortnight - was worse. Power went off at some point last night, but not enough to cause any serious trouble.

I agree with this. I would also say: if you don’t have at least one friend who comes from that culture… why the hell are you trying to write about it?

The fewer people you actually know from that culture, the more likely it is you’re writing about a stereotype in your head not about real people.
Ran across the common writing take: "writing a pov character from a culture other than your own is appropriation."

I would like to offer my substitution: "the further away from your experience your pov character is, the higher the difficulty level."

“There’s more water carried along the roads in lorries than runs in our streams.”
How has it come to this: that private companies are licensed to abstract water from aquifers below parched regions, then sell it back in bottles to those who live & struggle there?

COP continues to fail us– and our planet . There were 1,700 fossil fuel execs present at #COP29 – larger than any other delegation at the conference . That’s why we’re angry– and it’s why I’m petitioning the Government to ban fossil fuel advertising and sponsorships .

#COP29 has failed to deliver.❌

Trust is broken as leaders leave glaring gaps in finance and ambition—putting people, planet, and the world’s poorest at risk.

We’ll keep fighting.

The UK is notoriously depleted in wildlife flora and fauna. Vast swathes of upland landscapes are entirely managed for grouse, suppressing many other beings that should belong there. Please sign, and perhaps we will begin to see upland restoration for biodiversity, not just one species to shoot.
