I feel that there should be many examples in stats / methodology. For instance, google scholar gives 2500 citations for Gosset / Student's 1908 paper where he introduced the T distribution. Arguably ridiculously low given the impact of the paper!

This is a sample strongly subject to selection bias, but I love the fact that when they apparently actually replicated a subset of claims, only 15% successfully replicated!

Publication bias in review of books

Over the last 20 years, suicide rates have halved in Europe, and increased by 50% in the US (but Europe started very high). I had no idea.
