There were many obstacles, technical diffiulties and sheer scale of the project. Each took 3 windows, with the 10th to be collaborative. Designs were delivered on time, deadline now June 1957. An exhibition of six of the windows was held in 1956 at the V&A #StainedGlassSunday (contd. next week) 4/4

Spence suggested the 10 Nave windows be made through the RCA, LSL to lead. Principal Darwin could see the benefit to the College, and students. LSL, two ex-students, Keith New & Brian Clarke, a studio manager, 3 assistants and a technician - to present designs by June 1953. #StainedGlassSunday 3/4

It was known that Spence had been commissioned to design the new Coventry Cathedral. When he saw the work of the RCA students, he said, "That's what I want for my Cathedral" - and negotiations started from that point. Lawrence Stanley Lee (1909-2011) (LSL) was Head of Stained Glass at the Royal College of Art (RCA). He invited Basil Spence to the students' 1951 exhibition. Spence found work influenced by modern art trends, free from restrictions imposed by conservative Church commissions. #StainedGlassSunday 1/4

I'm doing another #ThrowbackThursday with my #CrochetMoodBlanket from 2014 because I'd only shown the first four panels last week and maybe you'd like to see what it grew into. I take it to crochet workshops at work wellbeing week, to show how you can go from simple to complex a bit at a time.

Finally we visited St Lawrence Jewry. Canon David Parrott had asked me also to photograph the other windows there. Just two simple windows from Lawrence Lee, more heraldry, to photograph, then the other (huge) windows in this superb Christoper Wren building. Worth a visit. 5/5 #StainedGlassSunday

Still more to get through, we went to the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers at Little Trinity Lane where we were met by the Beadle. Lawrence Lee took many secular commissions and here was more heraldry. His son Stephen says they will have put food on the table. 4/5 #StainedGlassSunday #LSL

Then to Throgmorton Street to the Carpenters' Company to see their landing window dedicated to former Master of the Company, Albert Bernay. The window has heraldic shields connected by a Tree of Life motif. The hall and its few hundred years old floor were stunning. 3/5 #StainedGlassSunday (See Alt)

Next was Southwark Cathedral. A large three-light window dedicated to Thomas Rider who rebuilt the cathedral nave. Craftsmen are depicted in the window (c/f post 5) as well as saints, the Holy Spirit, and angels. Another newer window dedicated to a glazier, with coat of arms. 2/5 #StainedGlassSunday

In April 2010 we went to Glaziers’ Hall. Lawrence Lee was elected Master of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers in 1974 and introduced practicing stained glass artists into the Company at an affordable rate - most members until then had been wealthy businessmen. 1/5 #StainedGlassSunday

What could I find for #SaturdayMono that was crochet/textile related? Well here's one of my favourite scarves. The pattern is Blossom Scarf by Kate Veselunka Kosenko and you can find her on Ravelry (you can find me there too as Mermaid Wiggle). #Crochet

Tweedy crocheted flowers. The first one had its larger petals/leaves needle felted. Experimenting is fun! #FlowersOnFriday #Crochet

#ThrowbackThursday to the start of my crochet journey. In 2014 I learnt to crochet making one square a day for a year, until I had 360. I spent the last 5 days finishing up the joining of the final block of 30, and bordering the whole thing. Here are the first four months. #CrochetMoodBlanket

Some cheery crocheted bunting for #MondayBunting - you can either make a granny triangle as you would a granny square by just making three sides instead of four, or you can start with a circle and 'triangle it off'. Quick and easy, crochet a chain along the edges and in between. #CrochetStashBuster

None of the chemists thought there was anything related to chemistry in the design, but we agreed they have a biological or astronomical feel, with LSL's favourite themes – Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Some of the glass was 'bathroom window glass'. #StainedGlassSunday 2/2

We were invited to the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2010 where two of Lawrence Lee's windows are installed, on two landings on one of the staircases. The light outside wasn't ideal but the windows were glorious. They're constructed in 'slab glass' glued to plain glass. #StainedGlassSunday 1/2

Honey fungus. Beautiful, but it can be deadly to trees. Sometimes you'll see tree stumps surrounded by them - this often means the tree lost the battle. Photographed in a local cemetery. #MushroomMonday

Lawrence Lee later revisted this image, again with the cross of light, in one of the ten windows made for Ss Andrew and Paul in Montreal. I don't have my own photos of these windows but this is the sketch in his son Stephen's possession. #StainedGlassSunday #LawrenceLeeStainedGlass 3/3
