"I like that Big Beautiful Bill because it cuts $1.4 trillion from healthcare, education, and food assistance. I’m still socially liberal even though the bill kicks 12 million off their health insurance and 22 million families will lose SNAP benefits."
I’m Socially Liberal and Fiscally Conservative, Which Is Totally Not Meaningless

My first graduate student passed their defense today!

Kind of a bittersweet feeling, but excited to see what they do next!

Similar to this, the rise of use of AI for meeting notes on Zoom is so funny to me. Like who is reading those? If someone wasn't there just, you know, call them and fill them in...It takes 5 minutes😅

This, from @tressiemcphd.bsky.social, perfectly sums up the quandary that educators find ourselves in:

“AI hollows out the foundation of learning because it strips you, gets rid of the mistakes, it gets rid of the opportunities for serendipity.”

Being a parent is wild ride. Like, at the beginning of this week I had no idea what a leopard gecko was and now I'm on verge of spending, according to wiki, the next 10-15 years with one.

I keep receiving and seeing messages from various climate and environmental groups discussing the "good" in this bill, which is interesting to say the least.

Days like today really make me wish we had light rail around the state😅

Nothing to see here, just Nature advocating LLM peer review.

“Feed your dictated notes into an offline large language model (LLM) to clarify and organize your feedback. A simple prompt such as “Write a critical reviewer letter based on the following notes. Maintain a professional tone throughout”
Three AI-powered steps to faster, smarter peer review
Tired of spending countless hours on peer reviews? An AI-assisted workflow could help.

Without science communication the important work of these great programs will be less impactful…which is likely the point. So sad to see.
NOAA's #GreatLakes Environmental Research Lab will be taking an "indefinite hiatus" from communications due to staff cuts. GLERL communicates critical weekly updates about the extent of harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie - like the one that left my hometown of Toledo without drinking water in 2014

It's not just fdr. One of the things the epa did not long after it was formed was document the nation's pollution via photography. That can seem frivolous, but generations of Americans have no idea why the EPA was necessary. This broke a million views when we published it in 2017
This is what America looked like before the EPA cleaned it up
A snapshot from America before the impact of the EPA and the effects of rules regulating clean water and air were felt.

This is very funny! But you’d be surprised by how many people in my life that had no idea about these reporting/evaluation sites that were stoked to “finally” see what was being spent.
"I've long wondered where my tax dollars are going but haven’t bothered to do the five minutes of research it would take to learn that all that information is already meticulously documented and tracked in numerous publicly available reports and websites."
Finally, My Tax Dollars Are Being Used to Uncover Publicly Available Government Information
Under President Trump’s bold leadership, his administration is ushering in a new era of financial transparency in government. I’ve long wondered wh...

Our project on climate change adaptation and downhill skiing was covered in the story below.

This project is just the beginning! Our team hopes to continue to better understand local impacts and try to support place-based adaptation strategies

Climate change is warming our winters. How are Wisconsin ski hill operators adapting?
In a study earlier this year, Wisconsin ski hill operators said snowmaking is the main way they're combating more fickle winter seasons.

Lately I’ve been blasted with random emails for AI related to teaching and research like “Webinar for teaching with AI!” and “Enhance your research with AI!”

no thanks-why would I want to AI away the best parts of my job? When AI handles my paperwork and reporting then I’ll join your webinar lol
