Part-time traveler, full-time teacher! NYC native, but strangely a fan of the Atlanta Braves and New Orleans Pelicans.
This is one of the truest statements I have ever read

I teach non G&T kids and they hate having their learning interrupted by those 1-3 kids too! No child deserves that experience. A good school has policies in place to address students who are chronically disruptive.

What are they doing differently from other schools other than presenting advanced materials earlier in some classes? I went from being a scholarship student at an NYC private school to HCHS and the teachers were worse at HCHS—including a guy who showed up to class high and promptly fell asleep

Eleanor Parker is also amazing in a 1950 prison movie called Caged. 1950 might be my favorite group of best actress nominees of all time

I have taught for almost two decades and I have never met a teacher who thought teaching accelerated classes was harder—and most accelerated teachers I know don’t do differentiation. Special ed is the hardest job—that’s why it has such a low unemployment rate

It’s also logistics—a lot of NYC high school and middle school ELA teachers have around 100 students and spend most of their prep time giving feedback on writing, not differentiation in planning. Class times are shorter so it’s harder to find time for differentiation in reading aa well

Yes, certainly in NYC, which is what we are talking about. It’s not the norm past 4th grade, as far as I know.

I’m a teacher in NYC and the main thing I object to is the name. Many of the kids in these programs aren’t gifted—their parents just make them study a lot! I’ve taught at schools with differentiated classes that didn’t use such a silly name—it’s not necessary.

Yes, as someone who has many relatives living in Louisiana trailer parks for reasons that are a lot more complicated than “they need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps”, I feel vindicated because I always thought his book was evil

My main concern is that in practice this will just mean abandoning Jackson, Birmingham, Atlanta, etc, which will hurt a lot of good people AND give Trump supporters what they want. Plus I unfortunately know a lot of awful, Trump-supporting people in the Northeast…

I read I, Claudius as a lonely, misunderstood teenage girl, and it has been my favorite book ever since. He's a truly marvelous first-person narrator.

I don’t personally use delivery services in NYC because it seems like a ridiculous expense to me. I have worked in food desert neighborhoods in the city and the people I know who live there count every penny. If grocery delivery was free maybe people would use it more.

I know people who use delivery services of course but people who live in food deserts in the city don’t so much.

But wouldn’t the Costco model be a problem in NYC specifically because we don’t have cars? No one I know buys very much in one trip to the grocery store.

As a teacher who used to teach at private schools, I think this messaging is partially for the teachers, who generally are quite earnest and want to feel like they are saving the world, not just teaching the kids of hedge fund managers.

As the child of a cradle Catholic, I don’t say this lightly, but I do believe Vance is in thrall to demons

I went to the Boxing Day Test Match in Melbourne once. It’s one of the biggest cricket games there is and I know nothing about cricket. One of the most fun sporting events I’ve ever seen.

The running joke about Hastings being a total fool for auburn haired ladies always sends me—just like the joke about ppl thinking Poirot is French.
