So WotC were incompetent fools that just put the art in there without even looking. The artist was the one that "cleaned up" his art through AI according to him.

They did actually hire an artist. The artist used the AI. WotC just was lazy and didn't look at it at all.

They "did support an artist." Just that artist used AI.

Funny thing is that the artist they used has done actual art for them. He just decided to use AI to "clean up" their art when in reality, it made it worse.
