The problem is many people did not see "democracy" as something that really served the people, or worth defending. They know the system serves the wealthy at the expense of everyone else.

I learned to meal plan in college, waiting tables and living in a Midwest Apartment where I couldn't afford heat. (Oil furnace required pumping in at least $300 worth for oil delivery.) I learned to cook on Sundays, and freeze the extra. Soups , chili, pasta sauce were staples.
