Posting my thoughts about Yomi No Tsugai / Daemons of the Shadow Realm. My favorite is (obviously) Asuma Kagemori 🦋
Idk, maybe his grief and worry for his sons clouded his judgement when choosing a partner. Even so, I still can't help asking - what was it that drew Gonzo to Akane? We may never find out, but I suspect she was just a normie who happened to have tsugai

He clearly loves his sons and I'm sure he really was concerned for them in the wake of Iori's tragic passing (and before that, Hikaru's mother's), but was getting remarried just to fill the motherly role she once occupied the right course of action?

Also, she didn't even bother to tell Jin that he has two older brothers! You know, the two motherless boys who she was supposed to care for? I'm sorry, but all this has me wondering just where the hell did Gonzo find this woman?

Left him with nothing but the shirt on his back and told him to go hit up a strange group of people that she is disgusted by. Nice. Jin looked to be only about middle school aged when this all happened as well 😢

According to Asuma, the reason Gonzo married this woman was so that she could act as a mother figure to his sons and yet just look at how she ended up treating her own son. Abandoned him to run off with some guy, stole the money that was rightfully his...

Obviously, not being able to handle the whole yakuza (with Pokemon) side of the Kagemori Clan is understandable. It's just...everything else that doesn't make sense to me

Also, it's heartbreaking how he makes himself so...small. It's in the way he suppresses his own feelings and doesn't seem willing to so much as offer his own opinion on matters within the Clan. Even when he disagrees with Gonzo, he doesn't dare challenge him - unlike his brothers

The chapter adds an additional explanation for why he may be so willing to do the dirty work: because it is the reason why his mother despised the Kagemoris. I can see Jin choosing to do the dirty work both to spite the woman who left him with nothing and to support the people who accepted him

It shouldn't be necessary for him to do so as he is just as much a son of the Kagemori Clan as Hikaru and Asuma are, but that feeling of being an outsider...of feeling like you're not enough to be part of your own family, is difficult to conquer

So, he burdens himself with handling the dangerous and dirty jobs necessary to support the Kagemori Clan as a way for him to "earn" his place there, or to show gratitude to Gonzo for taking him in when he had nothing

Before his backstory was explored, Jin came across to me as someone who feels deep down like he's insufficient. To him, it's not enough that he's accepted by others as the Kagemori head's son. I don't think that feeling of being an outsider ever fully went away

He willingly takes on the dirty work to protect the Clan. I recall that in the German translation, Asa claims that Jin does so for the sake of his brothers too. I'm not sure how accurate that translation is, but it hints at his feelings regarding his place in the Kagemori family

The emblem of Higashi Village seems to include the same eye symbol that was on the cloth covering Break's face. Seal's gotta have one too with the symbol on the left side of the cloth. Hmm...Right and Left - Break and Seal's natural enemies 🤔

Just ordered a copy 🙌 I love the slipcovers that come with the German edition! I'm still learning German, but it's fun to compare it with the English translation sometimes. I think the German edition of volume 6 had Yozakura and Asagiri going to Eurovison instead of the Kohaku Song Battle lol

...It's also associated with terminally online Japanese gamer speak from the late 2000s / early 2010s. That's probably not what Arakawa was going for here though lol. No, I think Asuma's just meant to sound overly polite and awkward in his speech. It's gotta be a challenge to properly translate

Interesting tidbit: In the Japanese raws, Asuma uses the very formal "-shi" honorific when speaking to Dera here. It's rarely ever used in day-to-day speech, although you can hear it oftentimes on the news. It's typically only used when referring to a person in legal documents or formal publications
