This new JWST image looks like one big spiral galaxy; but it's not! The central spherical blob is a massive galaxy closer to us, and the reddish blue wrapped around it is another spiral galaxy behind it very far away. The central blob should block the light of the spiral; we shouldn't see it at all!

Oh. My. Wow. This image here, THIS STUNNING PHOTO, was taken by Blue Ghost on the Moon. Because while we saw a lunar eclipse on Earth, the Moon saw a solar eclipse at the same time. That's us, Earth, eclipsing the Sun. And it just gives me goosebumps to see like this!!

My first try of the total lunar eclipse with a Canon EOS RP camera. I'll definitely need to get a telephoto lens!

Lunar eclipse happening right now friends. Can already see a bite taken out of the moon! (This is just taken with my Samsung S24 Ultra for now)

Wow. Blue Ghost has taken is first images, and one of them was this: sunrise on the Moon. That's our Sun, as a star. From the Moon. Beautiful.

Blue Ghost, the moon lander from Firefly Aerospace, landed on the moon last night. It took a selfie from the lander. And that's us, up in the sky ❤️

While it's nice to look up into space to see the enormity of it all, it's also a good reminder to look down, at this beautiful rock we live on, from above. Everything you know, your friends, enemies, what you've learned, loved, hated, experienced, all originated from this beautiful ball we live on.

Saw these two cosmic beauties in the sky yesterday evening. Perfect timing, I caught a plane as it flew by them!

That's Venus and the Moon, by the way. Be sure to catch a glimpse tonight! The moon will be above Venus instead of below, as you see here. You'll see Saturn farther above.

It's World Hamster Day, so I had to share this adorable snap of Muini 🥹❤️ I miss this little bundle of joy. Do you have any hamster pics to share?

Wanna hear something incredibly cool? A small swatch of material from the Wright Brother's plane, the first plane to ever fly on Earth, was also part of the first ever flight on Mars, with Ingenuity. What a beautiful thing.

This is the most STUNNING IMAGE OF VENUS I'VE EVER SEEN.
This may come as a surprise, but did you know Venus has the most volcanoes of all the planets and moons in the solar system?! Over 80,000! And yes, it is volcanically active.

Happy 2024, friends! I came across quite an incredible shot of a volcano eruption on Io I had to share, taken by the Galileo spacecraft on Feb 22, 2000. The resolution wasn't great, so I tweaked it in Topaz Gigapixel AI, and WOW, IS IT STUNNING.

This is a very special moment I have been waiting and working a long time for: I SUBMITTED MY FIRST FIRST-AUTHOR PAPER TO THE ARXIV!! Excited to tell you about it. I worked with incredible coauthors and learned so much from each of them. Keep your eyes out on Sunday when submissions are announced!!

Huge congrats to the 2023 Nobel physics laureates, Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier, who won the prize for creating flashes of light short enough to study rapid movements of electrons inside atoms!

Anne L’Huillier is the 5th woman to win a Nobel Prize in Physics. Amazing!!

In JWST style, we're once again brought even clearer views of the remnant of the explosive death of a massive star 19 times the mass of the sun in the Large Magellanic Cloud, 160,000 light years away: SN1987A. It is the nearest supernova explosion seen (in 1987) since Kelper's supernova in 1604.

Today, we have new views of the Whirlpool Galaxy from the JWST! I laid the images taken by each instrument side by side, plus the composite, and the Hubble version. You can really see how the mid IR (MIRI) brings a whole new light to galaxies!

Which version is your favorite?
