I'm guessing because its a one-print-run TCG set they have to do retail like this, it'd never work for a normal tabletop game. The goal with a normal board or card game is to build buzz and then do reprints. Having a few retailers with pre-orders is great but not the norm.

Setting the goal a bit low for momentum reasons has been a thing on crowdfunding for a while, but a 50K goal for 2.5M is pretty wild.
