In 1963 the US govt spent 2.5% GDP on research in America. This was on top of what business spent on research, and was not conflated with business "spending" on research by bundling in expenses like advertising into their research budgets.

That spike in 1963 has driven our economy for decades.
Some charts for those who don't know the extent of the US public (and private) investment in research (particularly in biomedical research) compared to other countries and institutions. The destruction of the US' scientific institutions has global implications.

Today I learned that when sugarcane farmers burn their fields, a “black snow” falls for months on communities downwind. Under FL law, burns are prohibited when the wind is blowing into wealthy, white neighborhoods. They’re only allowed when it’s blowing into poor, majority black areas.
Sugarcane burning is a plague on these Black Floridians

I used to be starry-eyed about the Internet. Not so much anymore but the worst thing about the Internet is that it made this asshole a billionaire.

When students were attacked by cops in the México City protests of 68, UNAM’s Rector - Javier Barros Sierra - stayed silent for fear of jeopardizing university funding.

Just kidding. He ordered all flags to 1/2 mast, led 80,000 down Av. Insurgentes, & gave an epic speech defending free expression

Oh and btw the solution to "not everyone has the time to dedicate to art, you classist" is not "AUTOMATE ALL THE THINGS AND DON'T PAY ARTISTS" it's "VALUE ALL LABOR SO THAT PEOPLE ARE PAID FAIRLY AND CAN LIVE AND MAKE ART IF THEY WANT YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE"

When facing the "All we need is STEM!" approach to education, my usual response is: Developing the vaccine was the STEM problem; distribution & getting shots in arms was the Social Science problem; getting people to trust it & combatting misinformation was the Humanities problem-- which did we fail?
