When Alli told me that my history of child marriage story was the first time The New Yorker shared a Teen Vogue story on social media, I figured I could quit journalism, that is enough from me. The skill and extreme care of every editor I worked with there cannot be overstated.
Alli Maloney, @leximcmenamin.com + @satansjacuzzi.bsky.social were forces of nature who made the politics section what it was

Conde mostly saw us as a thorn in their side + underinvested in TV overall, repeatedly slashing budgets, not backfilling roles + now folding TV into Vogue. It's a damn shame

🔥 As you may have seen, in recent days, I've been going to the Broadview ICE facility near where I live. For @vanityfair.com I wrote about those protests & the hell that the Chicago area is being put through thanks to ICE/DHS. I hope you'll read this & share it. www.vanityfair.com/news/story/c...
Postcard From Chicago: There’s an ICE Facility in My Backyard
Chicago was not a war zone when Trump’s Operation Midway Blitz began. DHS and ICE have made it one.

Andy Stone told me that any kids uncomfortable with chatbot outputs can report the chatbot the same way they would a predator. But Meta child safety whistleblower Arturo Bejar says there are easy ways Meta won't implement to actually monitor how many kids receive creepy outputs.

I also went through legal docs and old tweets, so you don't have to, which may be helpful to anyone trying to read through the lines of Elon Musk and Sam Altman's bubbling AI feud.

Seems like a good time to re-up this story where I talked to Cory Doctorow and one of Meta's only early Facebook rivals about Meta's (failing) plan to use AI friends to keep users locked into its apps: arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...
Meta hypes AI friends as social media’s future, but users want real connections
Two visions for social media’s future pit real connections against AI friends.

Wherein I explain that if YouTube's AI gets a user's age wrong, it will be their burden to prove how old they are, with very few privacy protections for the data collected -- and that is creepy and inhibiting and risky arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...
YouTube’s selfie collection, AI age checks are concerning, privacy experts say
Any YouTuber wrongly labeled a teen must provide an ID, credit card, or selfie.

I had planned to do a live tariff talk tomorrow with CTA, but CTA's expert, for unforeseeable reasons, had to pull out, so now I'm afraid the world must wait until whenever chip tariffs drop (maybe next week) for me to do another deep dive. Very sorry for the short notice!
