Water turnover (the gold standard measurement) peaks around 7 liters per day for adults at age 40. Further we show that higher water turnover was associated with better hydration status and healthier kidney function.

Excited to share our paper in the Aug issue of Hypertension! Shockingly no health standards exist for sodium & chloride in drinking water, only palatability standards. We show water NaCl is assoc w higher BP, hypertension & albuminuria w effects below palatability

A bright spot - one of my mentored undergrads just had a first author paper published!! We evaluated how different #heatstress measures relate to #hydration status & #thermal #heat perception in a semi-arid environment.
tl/dr: Ambient temp & WBGT > heat index

YIKES!!! The climate change and health initiative website at NIH is gone! All these websites from climateandhealth.nih.gov are down

🌊 Proud to share our new paper showing how during a historic 2022 drought in n. Kenya chronic #stress (via nail cortisol) & high levels of #waterinsecurity were assoc. with ⬆️ levels of inflammation. Climate change negatively affects human health & biology. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Nice email to start the semester! Great job by 2023 Koobi Fora Field school student Lilian Baker on working with me to turn her field school project into a now accepted first authored paper at Annals of Human Biology!

Please share with your undergraduate students interested in getting #biologicalanthropology research and field work experience in northern Kenya!

Main takeaway #3: Children who identified as Black and Hispanic had 3.5 and 7.1 times the odds of White children of experiencing simultaneous food & water insecurity. Huge gaps in full food and water security as well. 9/13
December 3, 2024 at 3:14 PM
Main takeaway #2: Overall, in the US the probability of experiencing both FI and the proxy of WI has more than doubled between 2005-06 and 2017-2020 from 4.6% to 10.3%!
8/13

Main takeaway #1: The probability of experiencing #foodinsecurity in the household is 53% higher for children who avoid their tap water than children who drink their tap water. This relationship holds over time, but there is heterogeneity by race/ethnicity & income levels 7/13

2) Once we demonstrated the relation btw WI-FI for children, we combined these two variables into a 4 category variable to understand the intersection of these insecurities and then describe trends in WI and FI from 2005-06 through 2017-2020. 4/13
December 3, 2024 at 3:14 PM
Prior work has shown WI & FI co-occur among adults, so in this paper using NHANES data, we did 3 things: 1) we first validated the tap water #avoidance proxy for the "use" dimension of #waterinsecurity for children – similar to what I did for adults 2/13 jn.nutrition.org/article/S002...

🚰 Water & food problems are 2 of the most pressing issues facing humanity, yet are often ignored in high-income countries. In this #bluetorial, I break down our
@naturewaterjnl.bsky.social paper examining the water-food nexus among US children 🧵1/13

This was the flawed study - and look at the outliers (beyond the Fl recommended level) in affecting the results. We all know that excessive fluoride is bad for health/IQ, but low levels are not and are protective for teeth jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Great job by Nat describing how Daasanach dietary strategies changed during the drought and affected nutritional status. She's working on this paper for her honor's thesis and will also be presenting it at the Human Bio Association meetings in Baltimore!

We used mixed methods to examine physical activity & norms during pregnancy. In focus group discussions, women said they decreased #waterfetching during pregnancy & relied on neighbors/kin to share water. Using PA trackers, the # of steps decreased w/gest age but more so in peripheral villages

Great job by Suha describing how reproductive status variation influences water needs - we've now used our 4 study waves from the longitudinal study to test this in this hot-dry environment and we'll be presenting results at the Human Biology Association meetings in Baltimore!
