I do what I want.

[ETA: Since we're in the new days of a new place perhaps I should be less laconic. I have been arysteia on a million platforms for at least 22 years now. If you've ever known me anywhere else, yes it's me.]
Do. Not. Want.

Wrote an A+ essay on Tess of the d'Urbervilles sitting on the netball court at lunchtime watching the game without ever having read the damn book. AI could never.
I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

Russian Civilisation (somewhat inaccurately named then, and sounds even worse now). It was timed perfectly though, with the USSR having broken up three years earlier. We did a very broad survey of Russian (and broader Soviet) history and politics, art, architecture, literature, and film.
What was your favorite early clas NOT in your eventual major. Mine was Ethnomusicology: an introduction to folk music.
I invariably get, "Ooh anthro that was my favorite class/cool professor" from people I meet. I tend to think soms of it is our outré material, being willing to talk "taboo" subjects in a cross-cultural context.

Ironically MY favorite class was probably Geology 101...

In one sense, I wasted many years of my life posting on Twitter.

In another sense, every second of it was preparing me for understanding and appreciating the moment we now live in.

I'd love to know the answer to this too, I've long wondered.
Do any of my Jewish mutuals feel like explaining what the "for" in "May her memory be for a blessing" means? Is it a literal translation from another language?

RETVRN (to 2003-era LiveJournal, the perfect balance between old-school topic-based forums and modern personality-based social media, but with literacy valued and no algorithmic promotion of hatred)
Word.

Every time one of my not very online friends or acquaintances bags on social media I want to scream “it’s not the concept of social media itself! It’s how it’s deployed and what it’s used for!”
i wish there were some way to separate the part of social media that has helped me meet some of the most important people in my life from the rest of social media that is destroying our society while making the worst shit-stains on the planet billionaires.

In the foyer at Greta Point, the restaurant my family went to most weekends of the 80s for Sunday Night Carvery. Roast pork and crackling for me, always. While the slowpoke parents finished their coffees, my sister and I would explore, including pushing all the buttons/pulling all the knobs on this.
Old man post: Ever see one of these?

The last time I saw one it had been repurposed to sell little chapbooks.

More for World Cheese Day, never say my priorities aren't in order.
A Lithuanian equivalent to “there’s no such thing as a free lunch” is nemokamas sūris tik pelėkautuose. It means “the only free cheese is in a mousetrap”

* read on for more international cheese phrases (this thread may not turn out grate, but hopefully it will be gouda ‘nuff)…
