I’m being laid low in Brazil by my lack of Portuguese. The menu said that you could order 3 individual croquettes. So I did. The waiter assumed I meant 3 PORTIONS of croquettes. Which meant he brought me 27 croquettes. And didn’t think that maybe a single person would not have wanted this many…

and pointed out that “intifada” is simply the Arabic word for “resistance.” It reminded me of this artwork by Palestinian artist Emily Jacir, who notes that “Allah” is simply the Arabic word for god, used by Muslims, Christians, Jews, etc. Refusal to translate is used as a form of fear mongering.
