This issue is recurrent in fandom because needlessly locking horns and discovering the unexpected consequences thereof is a universal lesson of youth. It just takes especially ridiculous forms on the internet in general and in fandoms specifically, and social media thrives on it 😓

I think every generation of fandom has to learn this lesson for itself 😓 I've watched it happen over and over again in different spaces (USENET, IRC, LiveJournal, Tumblr, boards, etc etc)
