Reflection The process of creating annotations via GPT was frustrating. The agent would not always clearly “listen” to my prompt, or utilize the correct uploaded article. I spent more time just waiting for it to do its work than necessary. Output was not focused on the specific parts of the articles that I chose them for. The AI often got hung up and I was unable to complete this task in a timely fashion. Instead of THINKING and DOING and LEARNING I was refreshing, reuploading, and repeating steps I had taken in the past. Why am I being asked to offload tasks to a chat bot? It isn’t helping me to think deeply or even assist me in pulling out the truly relevant material. I will have to re-do ALL OF ITS WORK next semester. This is frustrating beyond belief. For example, in the AI generated annotation of AIDE10, the takeaway is “This study reminds me that when planning Professional Development I need to design programs that integrate artistic activities and emphasize parental involvement to holistically support children's creative growth.“ However, that is absolutely NOT what I want to be thinking about when crafting PD. The chatbot incorrectly lumped/emphasized the parental involvement into the takeaway. Another frustrating bit about this assignment is that I cannot feed the LLM a physical book. Some of my material is not available as an e-publication. And…is it LEGAL TO FEED SOMEONE ELSE’S WORK INTO AN LLM? Is it? Seriously…I don’t really think it is. This all stinks. Let me be frank, doing this work, the annotations and then the takeaway, IS THE WORK. Asking or allowing for a machine to ‘do’ it for me is robbing me of the critical thinking and analysis necessary to impart my PD sessions with thoughtful planning and meaningful pedagogy. Is that the takeaway we’re supposed to get from this assignment? I’m not sure it is. But if we continue to allow our own ideas and thought processes to be supplanted, we will atrophy and everyone will suffer. For this reason, especially in regards to the last two AI generated annotations, I have elected to be sure to include the supporting quotes that work for MY FUTURE PD ENDEAVORS, not necessarily ones that support the AI generated takeaway. If the goal of this assignment was to go through and FIX the AI gen work, well that would be even more annoying and futile. I could have JUST DONE THE WORK in the same amount of time, or perhaps less time, than it took to go through the motions of feeding the LLM my input and then scouring the material for supporting quotes.
