Being a british citizen with an american wife is really... fun... because there's always at least one, but usually two, absolutely horrific governments making life worse for us and the people we care about...

it is impossible to overstate the extent to which this country is now being run by people you would leave a party rather than talk to for five minutes
they hate music, they hate art, they hate artists, they hate pop, they hate the video games they play, they hate the movies they watch, like, they're just all the worst fucking people you've ever met, none of them believe in anything

The TLDR of the Streeting review is your quality of life doesn't matter so long as you are contributing to the economy and employment stats - which will exacerbate most MH conditions and increase suicide rates, which they don't care about either because the economy, stupid.

WAFFLES DECLARATION
aka things this post doesn’t say:
- this feeling is insurmountable
- this feeling is constant
- this feeling trumps other feelings
- I think AI can do everything I can do
- AI isn’t exciting
- my feelings should affect the pace of AI progress
- all other people feel like this
For my part, seeing AI catch up to my abilities in several domains has been painful. I feel a sense of loss. And I’m in a position where I have (a tiny bit of) leverage and control over the process. I can only imagine how painful it would be if I felt like it were completely out of my hands

There's a small matter of us being people too but I only mention that in passing
"immigration has to go up for our growth goals, but our policy is to bring it down"

uk politics in a nutshell
There is an actual interesting little deceit in the budget, namely ther have the OBR still forecasting based on increasing net immigration back to 300-350k whilst the Home Secretary is promising to bring it down from 200k, which does dissolve about half the headroom, but somehow we're doing vibes.

The media is absolutely biased. One thing I find interesting and kinda unknowable is: how/why/when did the median liberal voter get the notion that mainstream media was unbiased? Where does the gravitational pull towards the idea come from, to the point where we need to admit its failure now?
When Howard Dean was the Democratic frontrunner for President, he was disqualified, by the media, for yelling "Yeah!" once.

At some point we just have to admit that mainstream media sources are biased.
Remember in 2000 when Al Gore was repeatedly misquoted as having said he invented the internet and that was seen the eyes of many as disqualifying him from office? Simpler times. Today, Trump makes up lies equivalent to "I invented the internet" 30 times a week and no one bats an eye. Good job media

Increasingly harder to deny the cruelty is the point.

This country truly seems to believe not only better things are not possible, they shouldn't be. We can only hope to turn back the clock to an imaginary past, not a better present or future.
Switched on BBC News and they’re crowing about how their investigation has led to the govt banning asylum seekers from using taxis to go see a doctor. Sick country.

I think this used to be the case for sure, not so much now now.

His overt political activities since COVID burned a lot of the people who used to believe in what he was selling when he was an eccentric billionaire doing sustainable energy and showing up all the haters.
Elon’s power is that he offers a positive vision of the future. This attracts employees, funding, support. There’s a massive techno positive hole and he fills it.

Since Cameron resigned, every PM we've had since has had broadly the same approach, the same policies, and the same results.

but maybe next time, it'll be different.
13% after 16 months.

And his unpopularity has "no floor".

lately i've been thinking about how LLMs must feel really amazing to use if you're a dumbass, but incredibly frustrating if you're just basically competent in life.

The best/worst writers are really good at turning what could be a job, or even career ending event, into a springboard to raise their profile, perceived value, and become a public figure themselves.

It's a real talent.

"This could take down Democrats, too."

I know. And I frankly wouldn't give even an itty bitty damn if it implicated every Democratic man in Congress, every Democratic hopeful for 2028 and every Democrat who has even thought about running for office.

Down with the sex predators, wherever they are.

When I last checked, all of the places of worship belonging to non-Christian religions offered help with no questions asked. A couple of Catholic Christian churches also helped, but the rest either flat out refused, or asked if she was a member and much she'd previously donated. 2/3

Probably not the only person thinking this but 'rich people doing it for fun and personal satisfaction' feels kinda political to me.

I have a choice of 500 different energy drinks and vape juice flavors, 'options' for all sorts of private healthcare.

But absolutely 0 chance of retirement, or getting out of the very expensive rental market trap.

So I guess it cancels itself out and isn't so bad.
Almost universal across the west. Voters have never had it so good. But they feel more was promised. And isn't just the cost but the difficulties of life, and the sense of a class that doesn't face these.

Difficult to sort in low-growth times. www.ft.com/content/7913...

Political parties must shift immediately and dramatically to the left to avoid alienating these frustrated and abandoned young women. Am I doing this right?
Our recent poll found that women 28 and younger skew substantially more left than the national average. Nearly 80 percent of Gen Z women want abortion to be legal and seven in 10 want gender-affirming care to be accessible for trans adults.

Abolish the Home Office
My American partner works in a specialist role for a multinational, one of three globally.

Her visa is in renewal. Her father died this week. She can't go back until the Home Office "computer says yes". Her route to ILR has now been restarted to begin at zero of ten years, after years here already.
