The new #pokemontcgpocket set has a surprising amount of power creep for a game that used to be pretty good about balance.

Decidueye EX and Solgaleo EX are so overpowered that I haven't found a good way to compete with them yet (except Oricorio-Electric). And, if both of their main attacks had […]

Fedi drama is exhausting and I try very hard to avoid it, but if even Kev is leaving then it's time to jump ship. I'm planning to move to a self-hosted glitch-soc instance in the next few days.

"monad" sounds like an insult and works pretty well as one.

"Jeff? Ugh. Total monad. Good luck working with him."

"I don't like to go there in the afternoon, place is full of monads, every machine is tied up and no one knows what they're doing."

Another library frustration: is there a standard Make-like task runner tool for #node? 10 years ago Grunt and Gulp were standard for this, but they're horribly out of date now and not compatible with ES6 imports. There are tools in other languages, like go-task, but I can't find anything similar […]

It's 2025, and there's still no widely-used standardized RPC protocol for #websocket.

I've looked from time to time, and I never find anything. WAMP is perhaps the closest, but it's massively complex, needs a separate router, and the company that "owns" it (Crossbar) is dead.

What else is […]

A game idea I'd love to see made someday, or make myself if I had time for yet another project: a combination RTS and 4X game with a day/night cycle that switches it between turn-based and real-time.

During the day, things move in real time; in the early game you manually move hunters and […]

I'm proud to announce the project I've been working on for the last two years - Xee: a modern implementation of XPath and XSLT in Rust.

I know XML isn't hip anymore but this is a programming language implementation in Rust, according to extensive specifications! […]

My main Linux desktop has started getting random crashes and "filesystem is read-only" errors. 😬

Booting up a live CD now, need to get my recent projects off of it before the hard drive dies...

Against my better judgment, I bought Civ 7. And I'm enjoying it so far!

The reviews mentioning bugs and glitches definitely had a point, it's crashed on me several times, and sometimes I have to restart my Windows VM a few times before it will launch. But when it runs, it's great!

I started […]

I don't get why people still use Express even though there are Koa, Fastify, Hono, and more.

A mystery I still haven't solved: Spartan Schema (https://github.com/ar-nelson/spartan-schema) is by far my most-starred GitHub project. A few weeks after I published it, it got over 400 stars in a few days!... somehow. The users who starred it didn't look […]

Recently discovered the Preserves data language: https://preserves.dev

This is *spectacular*. It's like Clojure EDN, but meticulously specified with a canonical, signable binary format. It's the exact kind of data language I've wanted for years, and I have several half-finished specifications […]

Planning to do a more serious homelab setup soon, which I may use to host actual paid SaaS projects (once fiber internet is finally available here).

I want a system where every single service lives on at least two machines, so no single machine dying can take a service down. But the reverse […]

Won 6-0 in the online versus event yesterday with this deck. It doesn't even have a single clear combo or wincon; Greninja, Druddigon, and Tauros are just really good cards, and the deck has a lot of options.

It’s not often that Nintendo leans squarely on quality-of-life improvements for its generational system upgrades.

Bigger screen, additional USB-C port, changes to the controller mechanism? It’s like they’re Apple all of a sudden.

I wish there was more work on the intersection of gossip protocols and recommender systems. if the recommender is running on the client and it can only see its local neighborhood in the network what markov random walk flavor things can you do?

Finally setting up a personal #matrix server that actually federates. But, except for various dev chatrooms on Gitter, I have no idea where to look for public Matrix rooms to join.

Any recommendations for not-overly-large Matrix rooms, preferably about tech or humor or games?
