On this day when the Big Ugly is signed into law, I am worried about all those who will lose access to healthcare with the unprecedented cuts in this law. A good example are those in need of nursing home care. Two thirds of Arkansas nursing home residents are paid for by Medicaid.

From a June 2023 report by Ark Dept of F&A, only three rural Arkansas hospitals had a positive operating margin, the rest are losing money. Will get worse with the looming cuts to Medicaid.

Arkansas has highest %age of rural hospitals at risk of closure:

"Arkansas is at the top of the list at 50%, followed closely by Mississippi (49%), Kansas (47%), and Tennessee (44%). Three states are at 34%: Georgia, Missouri, and Oklahoma."

According to the March of Dimes, 41% of all deliveries in Arkansas are paid by Medicaid. Even now, before the looming cuts, there are large "obstetric care deserts" in Arkansas. Helps to explain why Arkansas has the highest maternal mortality rate in the country. Likely to worsen.

71% of the rural hospitals in Arkansas were losing money in 2024. The proposed cuts in the BBB will close many of them.

NIH announced an immediate cut to all current and future biomedical research grants. In AR, UAMS, ACH, and UAF are the largest recipients of these NIH grants; data from 2024 below. Immediate cuts to UAMS of about 12 million, to ACH of about 2.3 million, and to UA Fayetteville of about 2 million.
