So when the Feds raided us, they were notionally here to seize all our computers and storage.

We just found a 1 Tb HDD in the bedroom. No idea how it got there, but it's one of our old ones, and most likely one of the ones that used to be part of a RAID set in a server we decommissioned years ago.

Raised at last!

(I deem this the perfect flag for the Actual Libertarian Movement, composed of those of us disdaining both rightist sociofascism and leftist econofascism. And, increasingly these days, vice versa.)

Controversial movie opinion: _A Good Day to Die Hard_ was better in the original Klingon.

So, if you have assiduously followed _Star Trek_, you will note that any perturbations in the constant drip-feed of exceptional hopeful events into human history invariably lead to humanity becoming a xenophobic fascist dystopian nightmare that slaughters its way across the galaxy.

A note:

If, on perusing your profile, I should observe that your comments on fascist belief in the cleansing, redemptive power of violence are nonetheless accompanied by a bunch of raised-fist logos and guillotine memes, etsim.,

Because I love to embrace the controversy, here's today's hot take:

You get to say slavery taught people valuable skills *if* you're, say, Roman, 'cause the Romans knew how to exploit people *efficiently* and it was part of how.

It’s Not Quite a Smeerp | The Associated Worlds (eldraeverse.com)

In which I discuss how Earth-descended life ain't the same thing as "Earth life, elsewhere".
It’s Not Quite a Smeerp
So, some worldbuilding notes on the nature of greenlife… It’s easy to make the assumption that it’s just Earth-life in every way, especially since I tend to use the Earth-parallel…

In things that annoy me to an unreasonable degree:

Using periods to replace spaces in filenames.

It's 2023! There is not a single filesystem in use outside a goddamn museum that cannot accept the humble space as a valid character in a filename! STOP DOING PERIODS.

So, rebuilding our media collection after losing those hard drives in the raid, the only thing so far I haven't been able to track down a copy of so far is _Blake's 7_ .

Incidentally, since various corporations and individuals have discussed their #AI alignment strategies, I feel like I should disclose mine too.

Basically, my plan is to have the AI repeatedly watch "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" until it successfully internalizes equine values.

In other things it took until yesterday to hear with regarding being raided by the State, I am told that this sort of thing happens because we have a broken Democracy (tm), and what we need is more Democracy (tm).
July 17, 2023 at 11:03 PM
Incidentally, until yesterday is how long it took for someone to inform me that being raided by the FBI is obviously capitalism's fault.

People keep saying that the problem with for-profit medicine is that the financial incentive is to go on treating the problem forever without curing it, but it seems to me that this also applies to car mechanics, contractors, janitors, and basically every other profession that ever fixes anything.

So I'm sitting here running restores, watching my network rsync its little heart out, and planning what to do when I'm done with that.

Trouble is, every time I think of anything in particular, a voice in my head booms out "BUT THE PARASITES SAY NO."

Stop normalizing.

Don't stop normalizing anything in particular.

Just stop normalizing.

Up until I had to reconstruct my domain policies, I had not thought about NetMeeting for over a decade. I may even have forgotten that it existed.
Yay backwards compatibility?

Given the sheer quantity of still-relevant options in its section there, I want a picture of me standing in front of the Group Policy Management Editor being handed an Internet Explorer icon.
