So refreshing to hear excellent discussion of why, although important, energy density of the cells themselves are not the end-all factor in designing energy storage systems. I can't wait for sodium home storage systems, as I have been holding off until one is available.

We make a point at ever restaurant using them to specify "no straws at all". Not a necessary component to get liquids from most serving vessels into one's mouth, imo.

Just need the resources to provide the electricity. Smaller, lighter transport makes so much sense. Here in the US our EV selection is mostly limited to larger vehicles that are inherently inefficient due to weight (vehicle and battery size).

I will stop now, not wanting to be contrary to a rightfully well-respected person such as Dr Jenkins. But I will reiterate the need to evaluate the CCP's motives and not draw conclusions around their commitment to the global environment. Energy is power, which is their understandable motive.

Lithium ion batteries are not that storage. Sodium ion should be the current focus given the massive US sodium carbonate reserves vs the world. Safer than lithium chemistry too (reference current Moss Landing situation).

The US has no overriding energy policy that focuses on long-term outcomes. We DO have an excess of methane, NGLs, and light crude that is best for gasoline production. We also have solar and wind potential but need storage capability to transform intermittent to baseload supply.

This is not to decry electrification. I am all for it. But let's not kid ourselves regarding the CCP's motives. Energy is power and the Chinese recognize their reliance on foreign fossil-based energy is an existential weakness. Food is their other weakness.

China lacks petroleum resources and requires energy. They have a command economy whereby they can try and engineer greater energy independence. Electrification for China is about national security and not environmental concerns. Also see their coal consumption.

It's no more expensive than our gasoline right now, actually. 70% chance it will be RD or a BD blend.

Unfortunately I know more about cholangio than I care to know. My mother's was more proximal, requiring many more procedures before an attempt at definitive resection, which failed. These usually are aggressive cancers with poor prognosis. Hopefully Mr Moss's was very early stage.

Sounds like cholangiocarcinoma caught early and located in a relatively small segment of his distal common bile duct allowing a Whipple to provide adequate surgical margins. The Thanksgiving day event was a smaller procedure to alleviate the bile duct blockage. The Whipple came later.

I have read many of his books but had never heard him speak. He has obvious deep knowledge and fluency communicating this knowledge. I mentioned "enshittification" without context to my "normie" wife like Mr Roberts did with his. My wife instantly and intuitively grasped what I was talking about.

Some of the very early Sony playstation 1's had a coaxial digital output and made for a decent CD transport when combined with a DAC (digital-to-analog-converter). It did sound fine, but you had to use a playstation controller to change tracks, etc. Kind of awkward. Ok, enough nerd for tonight...

To be more nerdy, her CD player with its MASH delta-sigma DAC likely suffered from considerable jitter, at least in that portable CD player product. The headphone amplifier on the device is a super-cheap op-amp as well. Regardless, she enjoys it, which is the real goal.

I didn't read the tagged thread but have to imagine the very audible effects of compressed in streamed music are discussed, especially if using decent headphones in a quiet environment, etc. Recording quality counts too. Cue nerdy Steely Dan reference...

None in stores. The silicone with pyrex inserts especially. I agree would be super irritating to have them stolen. They have a black Friday sale every year. We just restocked.

What's is made out of? If synthetic fiber(s), maybe better to landfill it and "sequester" the petroleum products in current form instead of combusting them. Do they really have incinerators there? @sfjsynfuels.bsky.social is working on better alternatives.
