I worked with Piccadilly Radio's Umberto briefly when he was a waiter at the Great American Disaster. That's it. That's my input. (Looking forward to this.)

The tricky bit, of course, would be to stay well clear of slipping into Austin Powers territory. Bond is a selfish, cruel bastard at heart (assuming he even has one). If the character is updated, you end up with a caring, sharing, equal-opportunities assassin - Ethan Hunt II - and who needs that?

One obvious fix would be to kick the whole franchise back to the 1960s, where the character can get back to being himself, with the fags and the flirting and all. Set in the present day, he's either a preposterous throwback or someone who's not James Bond (i.e. Connery) at all.

A ticking clock for us to impatiently tut-tut along to.

Great movie. And at the time unusual for the protagonist's female sidekick to have been age appropriate: Connery and Steenbergen were both 50 when it was made. Go, oldies!

Did Gene Hackman ever play a journalist? Why wasn't Honor Blackman called Honor Whitewoman? Should David Letterman reinvent himself as David Emailman? Is... *hooked off*

This is absolutely true. Qobuz, though, not only has Tidal's quality and just as broad a catalogue, but they pay artists even more - nearly twice as much as Tidal and so about seven times as much as Spotify.
November 10, 2025 at 8:30 PM
Qobuz is also the platform with the highest royalties for artists - up to twice as much as Tidal, who are in second place:

Qobuz: $0.0187–$0.022
Tidal: $0.0128–$0.0133
Apple Music: $0.0078–$0.01
Amazon Music: $0.004
Spotify: $0.003–$0.004
YouTube Music: ~$0.00069

Not imagining it. Although, if you haven't committed already, Qobuz sounds just as good or better and the interface is more stable, if my experience is any indication.

Yes! Oxford commas can often avoid ambiguity, but applying them across the board can create as many problems as it solves, usually by setting up a false parenthesis. They are certainly not always a good idea:

Also at the event were Cher, the president of Kazakhstan, and three sumo wrestlers.

As you note,*colega* is colloquial, equivalent to "buddy", "pal", etc. ("one of his mates" = *un colega suyo*), whereas *compañero* is more formal/neutral and it's broader than "colleague", not just for work: a housemate/flatmate is a *compañero de casa/piso* (often abbreviated to just *compi*).

Isn't that the cover of the 14th Pure Prairie League album?
November 8, 2025 at 10:33 AM
The album does very little for me, at least on first listen, but I'm so glad it exists. Pop is currently in a rut as bad it's ever been. Different is good, even if it's not necessarily my thing.

Isn't it more likely to have been the Col. Kilgore role (Robert Duvall) rather than Kurtz? I thought he'd already cast Brando when the project was in its initial stages of development.

Oops. I got so bitter and twisted typing that that I forgot to put "pap" before "churned".
November 7, 2025 at 4:16 PM
No, for me neither, but surely better that than the heaving mass of pop-by-numbers, written-by-committee churned out by yer Taylors, yer Olivias and yer Sabrinas that seems to be the default nowadays.

I'm not a fan either, particularly, but artists who buck the prevailing trends in rock 'n' pop 'n' roll by doing interestingly weird shit - hi, Tom Waits! hi, Kate Bush! and yes hi to you too, Bkörk! and hi even to you, Mike Oldfield! - are something that definitely should be encouraged, I feel.

He was "Davey" as Jones, certainly, so I expect he accepted Dave as well back then. I've justr never heard anyone daving him after he adopted the Bowie surname. It just sounds so wrong, doesn't it?

Erm? I don't get that one.

Mssrs Gilmour and Hepworth both went the other way round, dedaving themselves. I also wonder whether anyone ever attempted "Dave Bowie" and lived to tell the tale.
