☀️🔥 Nothing says dedication like hauling wetland soil cores under the blazing sun! Huge shout-out to our postdoc Sona and lab tech Danica for braving the heat to bring back samples that hold secrets of microbial life and carbon cycling. 🌱🦠 #fieldwork #wetlands #phages

Phage season in the lab 🧫🦠
We kicked off a DOE-supported workshop with students from @sfstatebio.bsky.social & @sdsuresearch.bsky.social trained by @berkeleylab.lbl.gov From streaking to top-agar pours to plaques: future viromics pros in the making!

Today was special. My first master’s student successfully defended his thesis! Michael Hajkowski was the first student to ask to join my lab in Jan 2023 determined, and passionate. Now, he’s off to UC Riverside for a PhD! While we’ll miss him deeply, I couldn’t be prouder. @sfstatebio.bsky.social

Sharing a piece that I wrote that’s very close to my heart and is now published in @cp-trendsmicrobiol.bsky.social. It’s a quick read on pathway programs for increasing inclusion and persistence in microbiology! doi.org/10.1016/j.ti...

I’m thrilled to share that our team has been recommended for the DOE RENEW awards! 🎉 Our #Phage #Pathways program aims to cultivate a new generation of scientists at the intersection of microbial ecology and renewable energy!

Whoop! Fastest migration to another space. I’m so thrilled I’m part of this community here.

Enjoyed sharing our lab’s work on engaging #microbes for #climate action #oyster #restoration at the CCC quarterly meeting. The Olympia oyster is the only native species along the pacific coast, yet its population has declined considerably! Stay tuned for more updates from @theanandlab.bsky.social

Grad student and climate action fellow Gabriela Franco attended the WEFTEC this year as part of the inFLOW stem-path program supported and organised by the Water Environment Federation! Congratulations!

My grad student Michael Hajkowski is presenting at #ABRCMS this week! Find him and his poster to learn about the work we do! He is presenting is on #amr in environmental reservoirs. Check out his latest work in our preprint: doi.org/10.1101/2024...

New preprint from our lab. Supported by DOE BRaVE www.phagefoundry.org. We introduce a resistance persistence framework to look at #amr in environmental reservoirs such as #waste streams; This work is graduate student led, >50% of authors are URM and/or 1st gen. More here: doi.org/10.1101/2024...

We’ve just launched a NBS educational pipeline with ten #communitycolleges. Thanks to the Coastal Conservancy and Kathy Boyer’s commitment to preparing stem learners for the workforce. I’m really excited to be a part of this effort and raise the voices of #microbes in #restoration. 😀🦠

What’s unusual and amazing about our paper? It’s undergraduate-led; all student co-authors are #underrepresented #minorites; over 50% are #firstGeneration
