Scott Krugman Feb 14•© Today I will start a series of posts on how to recognize vaccine preventable illnesses, because they are all coming back as our public health infrastructure is unraveling and very few people under the age of 60 have seen any of these illnesses. Illness 1: Measles Type of infection: Virus Transmissibility: Extremely contagious Clinical Course: 5 days of fever, runny nose, cough, mouth lesions, and red eyes - rash starts on day 4 and progresses from a few bumps to everywhere for a total of 4-5 days Risk: 1 in 5 unvaccinated children hospitalized, 1 in 1000 with brain swelling Complications: severe hemorrhagic measles, ear infections, pneumonia, croup, brain swelling and SSPE (late onset neurological deterioration leading to death, long term immune suppression and risk for future infections Treatment: none Prevention: Measles vaccine Pictured- babies with red rashes Heath Her Shared on my page along with this commentary: measles - In my 12 years as a pediatrician, l've only seen measles in Africa, amongst young children who had lacked access to the vaccine. Measles is one of the most contagious infectious diseases, it spreads super fast. These kids are SICK. There is currently an outbreak in Gaines, Texas with 48 cases, with all cases amongst unvaccinated individuals, mostly children. Among cases 13/48 are sick enough to be hospitalized (hospitalization rate of 27% which is insane - by comparison the hospitalization rate for influenza is 0.06% for all ages and 0.12% for young kids). The irony of public health is that its biggest victories are invisible - it's kids and babies *not* getting sick, *not* dying. Let's keep vaccine-preventable illnesses invisible in our country!
