One of our favorite items in Archives is a scrapbook with drawings Arthur White, working in British Columbia, sent to Irma Higgins here in Kearney in the 1930s. This drawing shows the imagined couple doing various activities, including ice skating. #WinterSports #ArchiveAdventCalendar #drawing #art

We think Henry Temple (the future Lord Palmerston) was aged about six when, on 22 December, he wrote this letter about gobbling up "mince pyes" on "Christmass day" to his mother.

Gingerbread is definitely a #FestiveFood favourite. It was in years gone by too, as this recipe for gingerbread can be found in a family recipe book of the Burrows family from Mapperley from the mid-twentieth century. Do let us know if you make some!

Handwritten recipe for Gingerbread (black treacle): 3oz flour- plain or self-raising 1 teaspoon bicarbonate 1/4 teaspoon mixed spice 1 teaspoon ginger Cream 2 oz of fat with 4 dessert spoons (2oz) sugar. Do this in saucepan. Add 3 dessert spoons (3 oz) treacle. Mix & warm gently on cooker. Add 1 beaten egg a little at a time. Mix in the flour mixture. Add 1/2 cup of raisins (2 oz). Finally 8 dessert spoons of milk. Bake for 40 minutes.

We missed a couple of @arascot.bsky.social's excellent #ArchiveAdventCalendar but we're back with #FestiveFood and this (perhaps not very festive as it was being cooked in July...) roast beef prepared in suitably military fashion 😎
