Marriage is the afterlife for which we have to cross this life, leaving behind our homes and pasts, waiting for justice with a light heart, where our homes become our graves. We decorate them with everything we wished for in another version of life, the unromantic family that we hate while living with it, but echo when we’re away. No one knows their fate in the afterlife. We hear the distant, holy melodies while we sleep upon silk bedcovers and eat from silver plates, not knowing they belong to a murderer. Out there, murder is so casual. Freedom is slippery. Pleasure is a negotiation. Tenderness means you’re easy prey. Vulnerability means you’re certainly dead. Crying means the other did catch you. Marriage is a divine, locked-up place.

Coming Next Month (as counterprogramming to the Frankfurt Book Fair): The 2025 Palestinian Liberatory Book Fair: arablit.org/2025/09/30/c...
Since the inception of the Palestine Library Frankfurt, we have been able to assemble an ever growing catalogue of hundreds of books not only on the issue of Palestine, but anticolonial and liberatory struggles worldwide. Visitors will be able to browse a selection of these at the event, and, once we start our lending program, take out books, just as in any public library. We also welcome publishers to send in samples of relevant publications to be exhibited at the liberatory book fair. In addition to this, we have a packed program of workshops, listening sessions, poetry readings, panel discussions and more, on topics such as: international law as neocolonialism (with Lena Salaymeh), the political economy of the Gaza genocide (with Shir Hever), militant forms of publishing, Palestinian song and poetry (with Club Sheikh Imam), and many more. Of great significance to the inception of this year’s fair is also our internationalist commitment. Though of course limited by both our means and the available time, we are looking forward to the interaction between movements and communities the fair will facilitate through the platforming of multiple localities of liberatory struggle.

A Life That Doesn’t Know How to Live By Fatena Abu Mostafa Translated by the poet I exist— but leave no trace in the mirror, like a forgotten shadow at the edge of light. I breathe— but the air passes through me like a guest who never sits, never apologizes. I hold the days and they crumble in my hands like stale bread in a starving mouth. Each morning a weary replica of the last, as if time cycles, then sleeps again. I endure— not out of strength, but because even collapse has grown dull. Dreams? I no longer see them. They walk on the far side of sleep and never look back. The light stopped knocking at my window. Voices became nothing but echo. Is this a life? Perhaps. But it doesn’t know how to pulse. It moves like the dead and speaks in a voice hoarse from exhaustion. Help support Husam Maarouf, a Palestinian poet, novelist, editor, and pubisher from Gaza, whose life and work are at grave risk. Husam is currently applying to the PAUSE Program in France, which provides urgent assistance to scholars and artists in exile. The program offers safety and the chance to continue creative work in collaboration with French institutions. A French university has already agreed to act as his host, offering the framework Husam needs to begin his residency. To make this possible, we need to raise €42,000. This sum will cover costs not fully financed by PAUSE and secure Husam and his family’s life in France for one year. It will make it possible to cover administrative procedures and visa fees, the relocation from Gaza to Paris including evacuation costs, as well as housing and daily living expenses for the first year.
