At first, I thought the baby grapes were bugs. I’m so happy they turned out to be baby grapes and not bugs.

I smoked a turkey today! It’s got an amazing flavor. Just waiting for all the juices to rest back into the bird before shredding it for dinner.

Look how clear! For my first time making tallow I think I did a fantastic job. Now I’m going to let it cool. Scrape the impurities off the bottom tomorrow morning and do another render and then I should be good to go for jars.

My bone broth fresh and hot from stove. I am going to let it cool off and then place it in the refrigerator so the fat can solidify from the water and then it’ll be easier to remove before I freeze dry it.

Making tallow and bone broth (not pictured) this weekend. I am going to be busy.

There are a few things I want to do this year:
1) save my own seeds
2) make an amazing brisket
3) making more spice blends
4) learn more about companion planting
5) grow a successful onion 🧅 and garlic 🧄 crop

Do you have any food and/or gardening goals for this year? Let’s help each other grow!

Potato prep day!! The flesh will develop skin to help it from rotting in the soil when we plant next weekend! Weather permitting of course.

Smoking pounds of bacon this afternoon. Hard to believe we had 8 inches of snow just two days ago.

Chickens playing or not playing in the snow. They are not impressed.

I wanted blueberry pancakes to go with my fresh bacon this morning for breakfast. I really should be trying to read a recipe when I’m barely awake. oh well these scones turned out amazing and tasted even better with the bacon. 🥓

OMG! I can not eat bacon any other way. This has ruined store bacon for me.

After about a week of curing this is what my pork belly looks like. I have washed everything off, going to let it sit in the fridge for 12-24 hours. And tomorrow we smoke it!! My mouth is watering already 🤤 #homestead #smoking #grill #food #bacon

Anyone else getting ready for the spring gardening season? Just bought our seed potatoes 🥔 and trying some new plants out like rhubarb.

Starting an experiment today. I am curing my own bacon! 🥓 This is a mixture of salt, brown sugar, curing salt, peprika, and pepper.

My kitchen experiment is done finally. Beef bone broth and eggs. I now know how to make fresh powder bullion and what to do with the egg over flow!
January 4, 2025 at 2:05 PM
I just found out that my favorite bullion adds two different types of sugar!! In the ingredients no mention of veggies at all. Chicken, salt, sugar and turmeric!

I am so glad I am making my own now. Beef bones, roasted veggies, herbs, salt and pepper! (I will make chicken bullion next time)
