I read The Nickel Boys this year and it truly gave a window into the horrific abuse that so many young black men suffered in “reform schools.” It’s a brutal read, but one I think is necessary. Also, it’s so beautifully written, it makes your heart ache

Micah stepped carefully through the trees, humming to himself, avoiding mud puddles as best he could. He took a moment to right the bottle—luckily none had spilled—and continued his search. Sun dappled between the oak leaves and danced on the ground. Birds twittered around him, filling the morning air with their songs. He could hear animals scampering through the underbrush. He straightened his wide-brimmed straw hat and pushed up his sleeves. A grin spread across his freckled face when he spotted exactly what he was looking for. Every forest, whatever its size, has its guardian spirit. And the forest outside of Roseyard was anything but small. Micah’s mother had always taught him that before taking anything from the forest, you should make an offering to its spirit. Keezy Young is an incredible artist and author, and their work does a lot to help destigmatize mental illness; especially something like psychosis which is often depicted incredibly negatively. Their book, Hello Sunshine, does this so well and has been one of my favorite reads this year! 🌼

Milo Ashton races to save the forest his family relies on, and himself, from a horrible curse. He finds help in Cam, a mysterious man living in the woods, who is seemingly unaffected by the curse that has killed everyone who ventured into Hatwick Wood.

It wasn’t work that would make them rich, or elevate them above the common folk, but it was good, honest work that would always be needed. And the Ashtons had always hunted in Hatwick Wood.
