Looking forward to this workshop, organized by the wonderful Alice Iacobone and Gregorio Tenti. I'll be presenting together with @jpatkaus.bsky.social. Our talk discusses the function of Anthropocene aesthetics in relation to planetary-scale dimensions of extinction and environmental disaster.

This presentation explores two regimes of signs in the Anthropocene: technocratic control and informalist perception. It draws on examples from the Veneto area, such as the Vajont dam and the works of Vedova, Santomaso, Tancredi, Afro, and Michelucci.

My lecture explores conceptual tools for understanding cultural and environmental extinction. I focus on two case studies: the representation of extractivism in the work of Edward Burtynsky and memory aesthetics in Giovanni Michelucci’s Longarone Church, built to commemorate the Vajont disaster.

Rereading Brecht's Threepenny Opera without drawing facile analogies is a challenge. The context: financial collapse, corruption, & rising authoritarianism.
The text: "What keeps mankind alive? The fact that millions
Are daily tortured, stifled, punished, silenced, oppressed."
Sound familiar?

2024 was about loosening the need for coherence. A storm is coming. Let the rhinos trample; perhaps ride one or two.
Whatever you do, dear Daisy, avoid watching the new Gladiator. It's a rhinoceros in disguise as it tramples cinema into dust.
«Mille fois merde, le Logicien est devenu rhinocéros!»

Burtynsky’s work renders visible the human species' power to shape Earth—for better or worse. Controversially, he also invokes the mining paradox, arguing that a green transition would rely on extractivist practices just as much as the current system does.

In his talk with curator Giovanna Calvenzi, Burtynsky describes himself as a "concerned artist" rather than an activist. He responds to critics who hold him responsible for the "aestheticization" of destruction by calling it a conscious, vital choice, which has granted him access to restricted sites

60 years ago, a landslide caused not by natural disaster but by greed and carelessness killed 2000 people. Journalist #TinaMerlin blew the whistle on the SADE construction company, in charge of the project, but was accused of spreading false information.
