Association of Postdoc at University of Geneva
@apdu-unige.bsky.social
We are a group of motivated PostDocs from the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Geneva. The goal of our association is to strengthen social and scientific ties between us :) :) https://www.unige.ch/apdu/
Grants writing tips: (1) Rejections are totally normal, have faith in your idea, push it and improve it; (2) Every panel is different. Study it and prepare your grant for them; (3) Grant-writing takes months. Plan it and get diverse feedback and (4) Have fun with it! The work there is never wasted 😜

I could also give the opposite answer: in countless ways.
Like an orchestra, science can awaken infinite sensations, emotions, even passions. Scientific work is a cultural good.
It doesn’t pursue aesthetic beauty — it pursues understanding.
Its purpose is to know more about humanity and about nature

“How has scientific knowledge in your discipline changed the possibilities of human action?”🤔

My immediate answer: it hasn’t.
And that doesn’t trouble me — any more than a symphony orchestra’s lack of “productivity” should trouble us.
It may not produce economic goods, but it’s vital to our society

Lately it has been demonstrated the essential role of organelle-organelle contacts. Here @jcellsci.bsky.social shows beautifully the main methods to investigate them :) ... although I believe Expansion microscopy can also help for that!

This one was made by Souvik Giri, a postdoc in the quantum materials discovery lab and... the only one member of the APDU of the Physics Department - so physics, don't be shy and come to the dark side as him-. He is focused in design and synthesis of new compounds with interesting quantum properties

Every spike in this photo is a single crystal💠 — an ordered atomic array grown layer by layer. These crystals of transition metal chalcogenide halide doesn’t occur naturally; we built it atom by atom⚛️. Single crystals, which are always chemically pure, allow us to characterise physical properties

This survey of Postdocs for 2020 reflects that even the uncertainties of the job, they were still putting all the effort and half of them felt satisfied. What do you think? Do you feel happier than last year? The Postdoc Association can always be a support for you 😊
