Have you seen many big decreases?

I would hope that the Disavow file is used for signals about the untrustworthiness of the site. I chuck in a lot more domains that proxy or scrape/rewrite our content these days.

[I use 0-9, A-Z for our file for my achey human eyes to see what's what. Currently 870+ domains in our disavow]

Bug Hunters didn't perceive it as a suitable issue.

Fortunately our Ad Partner Publisher Collective has a Google contact who have raised it on our behalf.

Canonical hijacks continue.

I bumped into a friend who works on (rival) PC Gamer and told him what to look out for. We want to win clean :)

We've done some digging and pasted our findings below. It has implications for how Google is reassigning publishers canonicals to scraper sites/malware sites, and taking out our traffic and ranking.

Googlebot gets served the scraped article. 'real world' people visiting the scraped article are sent to a malware site/single page with an expletive on.

The issue is with Google picking a hacked domain and giving that authority *over* the source domain.

Looks like it started at the beginning of June for us. Multiple sites of ours affected, a handful of URLs. The 'fake' canonicals are various domains.

Chrome sees a different page than Google Sheets when previewing the bad URLs so some user agent specific stuff we think to fool Google we think.

The hand that feeds it is certainly concerned how far above the elbow Google AI Overviews is currently gnawing.
