Shrinemaxxing in Nagoya 😆 Is this… #ShrineSunday? 🦋

The theme is animal shrines!

First is: Sheep 🐏
Hitsuji Jinja 羊神社 is supposedly one of only two sheep shrines in all of Japan! (the other is in Gunma Pref according to the priest).

Singapore’s version of conversion therapy came from USA when Sy Rogers planted the Asia Pacific headquarters of Exodus International here.

Even after it shut down, they continued is still running today.

I wrote a book about it.

This is the ebook version:

Absolutely gorgeous photos of wildlife in Botswana taken by my friend. 😍

I should perhaps start uploading photos on my @leaflet.pub too. 📸

Hmm. 🤔

Simply put: fict/fact/fuct -
Fict = a fact in a fictional narrative;
Fact = held as true by a faction; and
Fuct = a fact that has been sold to people as if it’s good for them when ‘in fact’ it’s just the opposite.
- I wonder what Fred would’ve made of this moment…
friend/mentor Fred Goodman differentiated between "fict"- a fact created by author of a work of fiction, "fact" as "only a fact to a faction" & finally "fuct" - a "fact that has been sold to folks on grounds that it's good for them when 'in fact' it's just the opposite" -I think about this often...

Nice.

I should re-write my memoir (Phoenix Rising: A Memoir about being Bipolar, Gay & Christian) & submit to suitable literary agents?

Hmm.
In Chinese #mythology, the phoenix (鳳凰, Fenghuang) reigns as the sovereign of all birds. “Feng” is the male, “Huang” the female, together embodying balance, prosperity, and harmony between yin and yang.

Fascinating. Gotta get myself a copy now. Thanks for sharing!
FINALLY! I knew I’d enjoy this read!

If you are curious about the roots of contemporary feminism and LGBTQ movements in Japan, this is a must read!

1. This is one of Singapore’s bestselling book, largely due to the Streisand effect.

The National Arts Council pulled the $8000 grant it gave as it “potentially undermines the authority or legitimacy" of the 🇸🇬 govt.

It promptly sold out at Kinokuniya.

Inspired by one of his posts, I would put one interesting word in each can, and use *texts as toys*.

To play, each participant picks up a random can, takes out a word, and can play an assorted number of games.

1) Word Association Game: List as many orthogonal words.

2) Linking Word Stories Game
My wife drinks matcha that comes in a really nice little can. I’ve been collecting these cans. I now have 35 of them. About 7cm high x 5cm diameter.

Open to suggestions for cool projects I might be able to make with them.

Violence only begets violence. Enduring change comes from building solutions, transforming minds, and cultivating what is good, in the human heart and in the world.

I remember my Malaysian Chinese friend telling me about a “香蕉鬼” which I’ve never heard before.

But she said I had! Only that I know it as a Pontianak.

I’m intrigued that Kak P also appeared in the Qing dynasty’s drawings. Super cool.
The Qing dynasty's Peach Blossom Dock paintings (桃花塢年畫) offer a rare glimpse into a vibrant world of yaoguai: shapeshifting spirits born from animals, plants, and household objects.
Unlike typical New Year art, these prints embrace the eerie and the absurd. Rooted in Jiangnan’s 1/2

Also discovered @hirokoyoda.bsky.social soon to be released new book from the Substack.

Very exciting!

I remember my girlfriend telling me about “Yaoyorozu no kami” (8 million spiritual beings) in Shinto and I absolutely love the homage to the concept.

Congratulations on your new book!

Very lovely YouTube recording of Hiroko Yoda & Matt Alt’s presentation of Spirituality in Anime at AnimeNYC 2025.

I will pay ever closer attention to Shinto shrines, Buddhist symbols & other assorted emblems of spirituality in anime going forward.

Thank you for this.

Increasingly I look back on the time when everyone was on Old Twitter like the undivided Church of the first few centuries - now social media feels as though it’s fragmented into denominations: the Xians, the Blueskytes, the Threadsians, the Substackites, the Instagramarians &c

this practise is understandable given what singapore went through in the 20th century:
- japanese invasion and subsequent massacres
- malayan emergency
- exhumation of whole graveyards to make space for public housing

all create a lot of wandering ghosts, torn or cut off from lineage sacrifices
7th month has begun. The gates of Hell open and ghosts roam the earth. There will be many complaints about smoke from burning offerings and spurious arguments about how 'true' Buddhism has no such practice. For me, though, the smoke brings comfort that a tradition is not completely dead... Yet.

a quietly disturbing thing I saw on Facebook was a 7th month altar - dedicated to the wandering spirits- in Hong Lim complex, Singapore.

This is near the inspection site for the "Sook Ching"-肅清 SuQing, the purge conducted by the Japanese after invading singapore; at least 10,000 were killed.

In this video, ordained Taoist priest of the Quan Zhen sect in Singapore talks about offerings to deities & to ghosts in an interview.

There are bilingual Chinese & English subtitles so I do invite you to watch the little clip.

In Chinese #mythology, Ox-Head and Horse-Face (牛頭馬面) are the grim enforcers of the underworld. With beastly visages—one ox, one horse, they serve Yanluo Wang, the King of Hell, as soul-reaping envoys. Their duty is to capture wandering spirits and drag them back to face judgment, 1/2

In Yunnan’s mining #folklore, a chilling type of Jiangshi (殭屍) called Gan Ji Zi (干麂子) haunts the tunnels. Formed from miners buried alive in cave-ins, their bodies preserved over decades, they awaken with eerie civility. When encountered, a Gan Ji Zi smiles, complains of cold, and begs for1/2

Thought to post more videos about the 7th lunar month.

This is an except from the podcast called “Hellbank” and the full interview can be found on YouTube I believe.

Here they talk about how as energy changes, people die. Hence the increased number of deaths in 七月, during CNY & Winter Solstice.

Very excited about this!

Can’t wait to read it whenever it’s out.

As an exvangelical in Singapore, I’m still friends with people who think that Christianity is a monolith & unchanging (when it’s neither), so this would be a most scintillating read. :)
